  • Tips for Talking with Third Graders Who Have Scored Level 1 in Reading on the FCAT Here is some language that you and/or the family can use when talking with a child who may be retained: • We understand that you are disappointed. We are going to identify just what type of special help we can provide. We know you can do this! • We are going to work very hard, right along with you. • When you are promoted, you are going to have confidence in your ability to do fourth-grade work. • Instead of struggling to keep up with the reading, you will be able to focus on learning exciting subjects like science, history, poetry, foreign languages, and mathematics.
