Tips for Talking with Third Graders Who Have Scored Level 1 in
Reading on the FCAT
Here is some language that you and/or the family can use when talking with a child who
may be retained:
•
We understand that you are disappointed. We are going to identify just what type of
special help we can provide. We know you can do this!
•
We are going to work very hard, right along with you.
•
When you are promoted, you are going to have confidence in your ability to do
fourth-grade work.
•
Instead of struggling to keep up with the reading, you will be able to focus on
learning exciting subjects like science, history, poetry, foreign languages, and
mathematics.
•
Do you ever feel stressed out about school because it is hard for you to read? We are
going to help you solve that problem. When we do, we think you will be able to enjoy
going to school.
•
You are the same person you were before; we value you just the way you are. In fact,
we value you too much to let you keep struggling when we can do more to help you.
Reading enriches life in many ways. Reading can be fun—and we want it to be fun for
you
