Reading First

REGIONAL Professional Developer

Application Package

The Florida Reading First program for professional development is developed with care and attention to the best principles of staff development and adult learning. The effectiveness of this program depends on the skill and commitment of highly qualified professional developers. Without effective professionals, the program cannot have an impact on education.

Therefore, the Florida Reading First leadership team has an interest in supporting the work of its professional developers. Professional developers are part of a team, mutually supportive and reinforcing, working both together and individually to advance the professionalism of educators in Florida. In delivering the Reading First professional development program, the professional developers bring their own unique experiences and perspectives to the teaching situation, and fully realize that the teachers assigned to their academies bring the same diversity of talent and knowledge. At the same time, while respecting diversity, the professional developers are also charged with maintaining the integrity of the Reading First curriculum. They play an important role in contributing to the ongoing improvement of the program by feeding back comments and suggestions from participants and in making recommendations for revising the program. The Reading First professional developers are a critical link to support the professional learning of practicing educators.

To be selected as a Reading First Regional professional developer requires a commitment of both time and talent. This team of 175 professional developers will be asked to:

· attend a five-day Trainer-of-Trainers (Spring 2003)
· conduct two four-day summer academies (Please indicate that if applicants wish to conduct additional academies beyond the requisite two, that support would be most appreciated.)

The Reading First Regional professional developers must have the necessary background, content knowledge, and experiences in both teaching children and working with adults. The minimum qualifications for consideration as a Reading First Regional professional developer are:

· a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution,
· elementary classroom teaching experience, preferably in K-3, and
· experience as a trainer.

NOTE: Preference will be given to individuals with credentials in the area of reading (Master’s degree or certification in reading or advanced coursework in reading).

Each applicant must complete an application package consisting of the following:

1. Application Form
2. Curriculum vitae – two to four pages using the template that is provided
3. Recommendation Form – to be completed by immediate supervisor or someone familiar with the applicant’s qualifications
4. Agreement Form – to be read and signed by applicant and sponsoring agency
5. Spring Availability Calendar
6. Summer Availability Calendar

These documents are being provided electronically. Please complete the documents electronically, then print them and sign in the appropriate places. One original and two copies of all documents must be submitted as a single package. Please do not send documents electronically. Completed application packages should be mailed to:
