Vocational Rehabilitation Service Projects for American Indians With
Disabilities (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The U. S. Department of Education (USDOE) seeks applications to provide
vocational rehabilitation services for American Indians with disabilities who live near or on
federal or state reservations.
DEADLINE
: March 31, 2003.
FUNDING
: Pending approval, $26.8 million. About $7.7 million of the total would fund this
competition. The USDOE expects to award about 21 new grants of $300,000 to $400,000 per
year each. The project period is five years.
ELIGIBILITY
: Governing bodies of American Indian tribes located on federal and state
reservations and consortia of those governing bodies.

Youth Violence Prevention (SAMHSA)
PROGRAM
: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is
seeking applications for community collaborations to prevent youth violence. Categories
include: 1.) Geographic or socially defined youth populations; 2.) Projects that address violence
toward or by girls; 3.) Projects that provide mental health services for youths involved with the
justice system.
DEADLINE
: January 22, 2003.
FUNDING
: $4 million for 24 awards across the three categories. The project period is two
years.
ELIGIBILITY
: Domestic public and private nonprofit entities, such as mental health systems,
institutions and agencies; state or local juvenile/criminal court systems; prosecutors’ and public
defenders’ offices; education systems, institutions and agencies; tribal governments and
organizations; community and faith-based organizations; health, substance abuse and social
service organizations; consumer, family and ethnic and cultural service agencies; and other
nonprofits.

: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is
seeking applications for partnerships to plan, develop and provide community-based substance
abuse treatment and related reentry services for juvenile and young adult offenders.

: January 17, 2003.
FUNDING
: $6 million for 12 to 14 grants of $300,000 to $500,000 per year for each of four
years.

PROGRAM
: The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics through its Mathematics
Education Trust presents Toyota TIME. Awards are for innovative projects that enhance
mathematics education within a school.

: Up to $10,000 per project.
ELIGIBILITY
: K-12 classroom teachers with three years experience teaching math.

McCormick Tribune Foundation
PROGRAM
: The McCormick Tribune Foundation, established by Chicago Tribune publisher
Robert McCormick, makes grants in four areas: working to improve early childhood education in
the Chicago area, supporting journalism and a free press nationwide, encouraging active
citizenship and volunteerism; and promoting local philanthropy through community partners.
DEADLINE
: Two-page letters of inquiry are accepted throughout the year, with the following
applicable annual due dates: early childhood education, June 1; citizenship, September 1; and
journalism, October 1. The foundation will request a full proposal if interested. Applications for
Communities Programs must apply through a local program partner, listed at

Columbia Management Group Young Investor Essay Contest
PROGRAM
: Columbia Management Group, part of FleetBoston Financial, seeks applicants for
its seventh annual Young Investor essay contest.
Students in grades 5 through 8 are asked to write a news story on a financial topic important to
young investors; students in grades 9 through 12 should compose an editorial on a major market
development such as corporate accounting irregularities, market volatility or the gap between
economic indicators and stock market performance. Maximum length is 250 words.
DEADLINE
: January 31, 2003.
FUNDING
: Winners in four age categories (grades 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12) will be awarded
shares in the Liberty Young Investor Fund (worth $5,000 for first place, $2,500 for second and
$1,000 for third place).

The Christophers Poster Contest
PROGRAM
: The Christophers, founded in 1945 by Father James Keller, uses print and
electronic media to spread a message of hope and understanding to people of all faiths, and of no
particular faith. High school students are invited to submit posters illustrating that one person
can change the world for the better. Original art must include the tag line “you can make a
difference.”
DEADLINE
: January 24, 2003.
FUNDING
: First prize, $1,000; second prize, $500; and third prize, $250. Five honorable
mention awards of $100 each.
ELIGIBILITY
: Students in grades 9-12.

Eleanor Roosevelt Teacher Fellowships
PROGRAM
: The American Association of University Women offers this program designed to
provide professional development opportunities for women public school teachers; improve
girls’ learning opportunities, especially in math, science, and technology; and promote equity
and long-term change in classrooms, schools and school systems.
DEADLINE
: January 10, 2003.
FUNDING
: Professional development fellowships up to $5,000. Project implementation
fellowships up to $10,000.
ELIGIBILITY
