Course Enrollments
As previously communicated in a memorandum to Public School Superintendents, entitled
House Bill
1255 Provisions Relating to Postsecondary Preparation for High School Students
, and dated June 20,
2011:
The changes in House Bill 1255 become effective July 1, 2011. It is expected that
students be provided postsecondary preparatory opportunities in 2011-12, and courses
aligned with the
Postsecondary Readiness Competencies
should be offered in all high
schools by 2012-13. The
Postsecondary Readiness Competencies
are anticipated to be
approved and established in State Board rule by fall 2011. Regardless of postsecondary
preparatory requirements, students must also meet all other high school graduation
requirements. The purpose of the postsecondary preparation instruction is to prepare
students for entry level college credit courses as well as gainful employment.
In order to facilitate district implementation, the following College Success, Readiness, and Prep courses
have been revised to align with the
Postsecondary Readiness Competencies
and
Common Core State
Standards
.
Reading for College Success (1008350)
?
Writing for College Success (1009370)
?
English 4: Florida College Prep (1001405)
?
Mathematics for College Success (1200410)
?
Mathematics for College Readiness (1200700)

The attached course descriptions are in
draft
, and we anticipate their approval by the State Board of
Education at its February 2012 meeting. The draft course descriptions include the
Postsecondary
Readiness Competencies
and aligned
Common Core State Standards
. Educators are encouraged to utilize
these new course requirements and
Attachments A and B
to guide student enrollment for 2012-13.
Additionally,
Attachments A and B
provide
recommended
score ranges for placement into the courses
identified above. These recommendations are based on the State Board of Education established “college
ready” scores for the ACT, SAT and CPT (also referred to as the Accuplacer) included in Rule 6A-
10.0315, F.A.C.
Attachments A and B
also include the appropriate scores for the Postsecondary
Education Readiness Test (P.E.R.T.) anticipated for State Board approval. Grade 11 students who scored
in Levels 2 or 3 of the reading portion of the FCAT 2.0 assessment or in Levels 2, 3, or 4 of the
mathematics portion of the FCAT 2.0 assessment are required to take a college placement test. ACT,
SAT, CPT and P.E.R.T. are all approved for this purpose. Students scoring
below
the “college ready”
score
must
complete postsecondary preparatory instruction aligned with the
Postsecondary Readiness
Competencies
during their senior year. All of the College Success, Readiness, and Prep courses listed
above will satisfy the postsecondary preparatory instruction requirement, and the Readiness and Prep
courses have been approved by the National Collegiate Association of Athletes (NCAA). Students who
enroll in Mathematics for College Success, Reading for College Success, and Writing for College Success
may not earn core academic credit to satisfy graduation requirements. In addition, these courses may not
be approved by the NCAA, Bright Futures Scholarships, and the State University System for eligibility or
admissions purposes.
