Annual Maintenance and Operations Cost Information
This document supports the mission of Florida's K-20 education system to increase the proficiency of all
students within one seamless, efficient system. Through this and other modes of assistance, the Office of
Educational Facilities supports the State Board of Education's goal to deliver quality, efficient services
(Section 1008.31(3), Florida Statutes).
Attached is the 2009-2010 Annual Maintenance and Operations Cost Information report for public school
districts in Florida. This report is compiled annually from the financial data provided by school districts to
the Department of Education.
Plant Maintenance
consists of activities for keeping the grounds, buildings, and equipment at an
(Section 1008.31(3), Florida Statutes).

districts in Florida. This report is compiled annually from the financial data provided by school districts to
the Department of Education.
Plant Maintenance
consists of activities for keeping the grounds, buildings, and equipment at an
acceptable level of efficiency through repairs or preventive maintenance. Plant maintenance does not
include equipment repair services which are direct costs of specific programs within the Florida
Education Finance Program (FEFP), equipment repair services rendered for the functions of pupil
transportation, food services, routine maintenance of audiovisual equipment, or the maintenance force
labor when used to construct facilities.

associated with school buildings include utilities (lights, heating, cooling, water,
telephone service, trash collection, and sewage disposal); custodial costs (cleaning and disinfecting);
safety (security and school crossing guards); caring for grounds and general activities (moving furniture
and other such activities that are performed on a daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonal basis); and insurance
costs.
In comparing school districts’ data, please remember that costs for materials and personnel, and other
factors that have an impact on maintenance and operations expenditures, vary throughout Florida.
