PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR NEXT
GENERATION SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS IN MATHEMATICS
The count down for ensuring each and every teacher of Mathematics K – 12 has had quality
professional development to provide them with the knowledge and tools necessary to enable
students to successfully master the new mathematics standards has begun. Current 9
th
grade
students will be accountable for the revised mathematics content standards (adopted by the State
Board of Education in September 2007) on next year's 10th grade statewide mathematics
assessment. Please make this a priority that you check one more time that teachers have received
this support.
Below are reminders of professional development tools

1. All districts have been sent the
professional development modules
for mathematics and
science developed through PROMiSE http://flpromise.org/. You may contact PROMiSE directly
if you need additional copies of these modules.
2. On the Department's American Recovery and Reinvestment Act K-12 web page, Strategy
Guidance Numbers 9 and 10, we have provided a list of facilitators available for you to hire and
bring to your districts to provide teacher professional development.

3. FCR-STEM is hosting a leadership conference October 20-22 in Jacksonville.

4. The North East Florida Educational Consortium’s (
NEFEC
) Students Understanding Math
and Science (SUMS) project hosts multiple trainings each year for teachers and administrators.
A schedule of these trainings has been provided through their website at http://www.nefec.org/.

PROMiSE
is ready to launch their third year of professional development for teachers and
administrators. For more information you may visit their website at http://www.flpromise.org/.

CPALMS
consists of three primary components; the foundational component is the Next
Generation Sunshine State Standards (NGSSS) data base. The Course Code Directory and the
Resource Repository are the other two components that make this a valuable tool for teachers
and administrators. The site can be found at http://www.cpalms.org/.

also provides resources for students,
