Kay Carnes, FASSP

DATE:

SUBJECT:
DOE/FASSP/FASA Assistant Principals’ Conference

I am pleased to announce that the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Association of
Secondary School Principals and the Florida Association of School of Administrators are collaborating
in conducting the Assistant Principals’ Conference this year. The dates and location are:

Dates: November 17 – 19, 2002
Place: Coral Springs Marriott at Heron Bay

This conference is planned with input from the Department of Education and a committee of assistant
principals representing all grade levels. A major focus of the conference will be on providing assistant
principals with information that can be used immediately to address current issues.

Keynote presentations, “Maximizing Assistant Principal’s Potential” and “If it’s to be, It’s up to me!”
will not only inspire Assistant Principals, but provide concrete steps to take to become more effective
in dealing with the various issues they face each day.

Concurrent session topics of special interest to assistant principals at all grade levels will be offered,
including in-depth sessions on Just Read, Florida!, reading strategies, teaching writing, award
opportunities for schools, and using free online resources including FCAT software. The DOE science
program specialist will address current concerns surrounding science curriculum and be available to
answer questions

Assistant principals will also have the opportunity to be among the first to hear about new rulings from
the Supreme Court regarding search and seizure, as well as new laws and trends in ESE. Discipline
issues will be approached from a positive behavior support perspective and another session will
address de-escalating classroom situations.

In addition to the keynote and concurrent sessions offered, time is set aside for roundtable discussions
by grade level for sharing best practices.

This is an excellent opportunity for the assistant principals from your district to receive information
from the Department of Education and educational professionals from throughout the state on current
issues and new programs. Registration information is available by calling 1-800-593-3626 or visiting
the FASA web site at www.fasa.net
.
Questions regarding the conference should be directed to Sharon
Gray at the number above.
