District Assurances for Middle School Science Initiative

 

 

This document outlines the features and benefits to Florida districts that participate in the

Middle School Science Initiative (MSSI) sponsored by the Florida Department of

Education and the Florida and the Islands Comprehensive Center,

 

This one year initiative is aligned with the A++ legislation and its purpose is to assist

schools in improving science instruction in the middle grades. District teams will attend a

series of three regional workshops and participate in online training to examine research,

explore instructional practices, and design lesson plans that incorporate rigor and

relevance. The requested assurances involve a comprehensive range of actions designed

to enhance middle school science instruction. The assurances are an essential step to

long-term change.

 

As district administrators requesting participation in MSSI, we agree to:

 

1. Establish a district MSSI Leadership Team chaired by a district level curriculum

administrator

2. Send the Leadership Team to all MSSI Institutes

3. Support and sustain the Leadership Team

4. Provide opportunities for the Leadership Team to implement training

5. Keep in frequent contact with the liaison assisting the district with implementation

6. Identify a CORR (Collaborating Online for Rigor and Relevance) facilitator and

support the implementation of CORR

7. Budget monies for travel expenses and substitute teacher expenses for the MSSI

Leadership Team to attend institutes
