FROM:
Dr. Frances Haithcock
DATE:
May 12, 2008
SUBJECT:
FCAT Writing+ Modification to Graduation Requirements
During the meeting on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, Commissioner Smith addressed members of the
State Board of Education regarding an intention to modify the FCAT Writing+ test and the state
board rule related to the graduation requirements for Writing+ (6A-1.09422 FAC). Board
members have accepted his request to delay for an undetermined period of time the requirement
to pass FCAT Writing+ for graduation due to concerns regarding use of the test for this purpose.
He also informed them that next year’s writing test will not include multiple-choice items (i.e.,
back to essay only) because of budget constraints. The attached fact sheet provides more details
about the recommendation.
Thank you for passing along this word to your instructional and school leadership. This same
information has been communicated to your assessment coordinators. We will begin work
shortly on revising state board rule and will communicate other information about changes as it
is available.
