MUSIC DEMONSTRATION SCHOOLS PROJECT

The Music Demonstration Schools Project is a collaboration between the Department of Education and the Florida Music Educators’
Association, and provides an example of “best practice” in collaborations between a state agency and a professional association.
Since 1988, this project has effected positive changes in identifying and fostering models of world-class music programs in the state
of Florida.

What is the purpose of the Music Demonstration Schools Project?
The purpose of the project is to identify and foster models of world-class music programs in the state of Florida. More specifically, its
purpose is to:
I. Motivate school officials, teachers, and other interested persons to develop world-class music programs in Florida schools.
II. Recognize individual schools that have responded to contemporary needs for quality music experiences and for highly effective
instruction in music.
III. Provide school officials, teachers, and other interested persons an opportunity to observe world-class music programs.
IV. Assist school officials, teachers, and other interested persons in providing and obtaining information to help improve music
programs.

What is a Music Demonstration School?
A Music Demonstration School is a school in which the music program is comprehensive in scope and outstanding in quality. It
contributes to the overall excellence of the school environment, addresses the Sunshine State Standards for Music in exemplary ways,
and promotes academic and aesthetic student achievement in music and other areas of the curriculum.

How are Music Demonstration Schools selected?
I. A review team will examine the submitted documentation to recommend schools for site visits, after which qualifying applicants
will be commended to the Department of Education for designation. The Department will then select and certify schools as
Music Demonstration Schools. Schools are designated as Music Demonstration Schools for up to three years, contingent on
satisfactory annual plans and reports.

Designation Years: 2009-2012

II. If there is a change in the school’s administration or music personnel during that three-year period, the music program will be
reevaluated. If the established criteria are still being met, the school may continue to serve as a Music Demonstration School.

What are the responsibilities of a Music Demonstration School?
I. The school must be open to school officials, teachers, and all other interested persons for observation of its music program.
II. Music Demonstration Schools must designate demonstration days for visitors to observe a variety of instructional activities.
Visitors, by appointment, should be welcome at any time throughout the school year to observe the ongoing program.
III. School officials and teachers must be committed to assisting other interested persons in obtaining information to help improve
music education programs.
IV. The school must provide both an Annual Plan in October and an Annual Report in June. These files must be submitted to the
Department of Education each year to outline and summarize the year’s activities.

What are the responsibilities of the Department of Education in the Music Demonstration Schools Project?
I. The Department of Education will disseminate Music Demonstration Schools Project forms via Paperless Communication to all
district superintendents and building principals, the Fine Arts Curriculum page of the Department of Education/Bureau of
Instruction and Innovation website (http://www.fldoe.org/bii/curriculum/Fine_Arts/), and the website of the Florida Music
Educators’ Association (www.flmusiced.org).
II. A Review Committee, appointed by the Department of Education, will review all applications and support materials to determine
those applicants warranting on-site visits.
III. All site visits will be conducted by the Department of Education Arts Education Program Specialist or designee, assisted by the
Florida Music Educators’ Association (FMEA), as needed.
IV. All applicants will be notified of the results, including findings and recommendations relative to the established criteria.
V. Schools designated as Music Demonstration Schools will receive statewide recognition by the Department of Education, and a
list of all designees and contact information will be maintained on the Fine Arts Education page of the agency website
(http://www.fldoe.org/bii/curriculum/Fine_Arts/).
VI. The Department of Education will authorize and award a plaque to the school administrator and music teaching personnel.
VII. The Department of Education will provide designees with general guidance regarding publicity, holding a demonstration day or
open house, and welcoming visitors on regular instruction days.

Designation Years: 2009-2012

What are the responsibilities of the Florida Music Educators’ Association (FMEA) in the Music Demonstration Schools
Project?
I. FMEA will assist with dissemination of the Music Demonstration Schools Project forms via its website (www.flmusiced.org),
and via direct notification to music educators, supervisors, and school principals.
II. FMEA will verify the membership status of all music teachers in each applicant school and, if submitted, verification of the
school’s voluntary participation in the Florida Music Assessment at currently available grade levels.
III. Site visits will be conducted by the Department of Education Arts Education Program Specialist or designee, with the assistance
of FMEA, as needed.
IV. Schools selected as Music Demonstration Schools will be recognized in FMEA publications and at the FMEA Annual In-Service
Conference in January.

What are the procedures for guests who wish to visit a Music Demonstration School?
For information concerning designated days for visitation, contact Dr. Linda Lovins, Arts Education Program Specialist, Florida
Department of Education, at 850-245-0762 (SUNCOM 205-0762) or Linda.Lovins@fldoe.org. Details for visiting a Music
Demonstration designee will also be provided on the Fine Arts Education page of the Florida Department of Education website
(http://www.fldoe.org/bii/curriculum/Fine_Arts/) and the FMEA website (www.flmusiced.org).
