SUBJECT: Requests for Proposals: Florida Learn & Serve Grants (Pilot Projects)
The Department of Education anticipates that federal funds will be available to public
schools and school districts for K-12 service-learning projects for 2008-2009. Funding
comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service and should be available
for project awards effective September 1, 2008, for 11 months, contingent upon the
timely release of federal funds to the state.
The Department is releasing this application package to allow adequate planning and
development by districts and schools. The complete application packet may be found at
http://www.fsu.edu/~flserve/apply/apply.html. We anticipate awards will be announced in
the summer after funds have been received by the state. At least $100,000 will be
available for Pilot Projects—one-year awards to new or previously unsuccessful
applicants, with an option to reapply. Applicants may apply for up to $7,500.
THE DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF APPLICATIONS IS MAY 16, 2008.
The goal of Florida Learn & Serve is to engage K-12 students in service learning—school
and/or community service activities that apply academic curricula and Sunshine State
Standards—to improve academic performance, provide opportunities for civic
engagement and career exploration, and address key needs in Florida communities.
