Two-Hour Life Safety Class
The Office of Educational Facilities is now offering a basic two-hour class familiarizing participants with the life
safety problems inherent in maintaining a safe building for students and all building occupants. This two-hour class
can be scheduled by contacting the Office of Educational Facilities, Planning, Review and Training Section.
The class concentrates on fire and casualty safety, making occupants aware of how to maintain a safe means of
egress from the building in the event of an emergency and keeping people out of a building while still having to
provide a safe, rapid evacuation out of the building.
The class is fashioned for schools housing grades K-12. A PowerPoint presentation with handouts and several short
exercises will let participants apply what they are learning during this class to real life situations. For example,
common violations to building and fire codes and the dangers they present are identified are just one topic that will
be covered. The importance of a good working relationship among local fire officials, district principals, and the
district’s own safety department is also emphasized.
This class has been well received throughout the state and has been recommended for building administrators by
local fire officials, emphasizing the importance of good communication among fire officials and district leaders.
