Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) – CAR-PD – August 20, 2007
1.
?
I attended the CAR-PD 60 Hour Face-to-Face Academy at the Rosen Centre
July 22-26, 2007, as a content area teacher. Am I now qualified to provide
reading intervention during the first semester of the 2007-2008 school year to
selected students who scored Level 2 on the Florida Comprehensive
Assessment Test (FCAT)?
Yes, if you completed the requisite Florida Online Reading Professional
Development (FOR-PD) or Florida Reading Initiative (FRI) prior to attending this
professional development. You must also take the required 30 hour practicum
simultaneously with providing reading intervention in the first semester of the
2007-2008 school year. Details on the practicum are provided later in this
document.
2.
?
Are all students who scored Level 2 on FCAT eligible to have their required
reading intervention occur in the content area class?
No. Only Level 2 students who are not experiencing decoding or fluency issues
may be served in the content area class. Staff at the district or school may need to
perform screening to determine this.
3.
?
Will students who scored at Level 1 on FCAT be in my content area class for
reading intervention?
No. Students who scored at Level 1 on FCAT must be served in an Intensive
Reading, Intensive Language Arts, Developmental Language Arts (for ELL
students), Life Skills Reading (ESE) or ESE Reading, as appropriate for the student.
4.
?
Who will supervise my practicum?
The district decides who will supervise the practicum. All districts have qualified
practicum supervisors ~ the main criteria being deep knowledge of reading. Possible
practicum supervisors include reading coaches (who have completed the Reading
Endorsement), district staff, supervisors of the Competency 6 Reading Endorsement
practicum or educators who have completed the clinical supervision training provided by
the Department of Education (DOE).
5.
?
What will I be expected to do in the practicum?
You will be asked to write lesson plans that demonstrate your knowledge of
scientifically based reading instruction, teach the lessons to your class, and confer
with and be observed by your practicum supervisor.

6.
?
I attended the CAR-PD Academy at the Rosen Centre July 22-26, 2007, as a
facilitator. Am I now qualified to provide the CAR-PD 60 Hour Face-to-Face
Academy to content area teachers in my school or district?
Yes, if you meet one or more of the following facilitator criteria:
?
A reading coach who is reading endorsed or K-12 reading certified.
?
A district staff member who is reading endorsed or K-12 reading certified.
?
A teacher or school-based administrator who is reading endorsed or K-12
reading certified.
?
An educator who has gone through the 150 hour CAR-PD bundle in its
entirety, including the practicum.
7.
?
As a district administrator, what CAR-PD practicum options are available to
my district?
Florida Literacy and Reading Excellence (FLaRE) has developed a 30 hour
practicum module that may be ordered from malove@mail.ucf.edu. Districts and
schools are not required to use this practicum option if they prefer to use some other
practicum curriculum. Most practicums are 60 hours, however, so they may need
to be adjusted. Please contact Betsy McClure at FLaRE (emcclure@mail.ucf.edu)
if you have questions about the 30 hour practicum.
8.
?
Can I serve the content area teachers who need the 30 hour practicum in the
same cohort of teachers who are completing the 60 hour Competency 6 for
Reading Endorsement?
Yes, though this may not be the optimal placement. However, as long as the learning
needs of each teacher are being met, and the content area teachers are provided the
requisite 30 in-service hours of practicum in which they apply what they have learned
about vocabulary and comprehension, this co-mingled model can be offered at district
discretion.
9.
?
What Reading Endorsement Competency 6 (Demonstration of Accomplishment)
indicators must be addressed in the 30 hour CAR-PD practicum?
Indicators 6.1, 6.5, 6.6, 6.7, 6.8, 6.9, 6.10, and 6.12 must be addressed.
10.
?
Does the 150 hour CAR-PD professional development bundle apply towards the
Reading Endorsement?
No. With the exception of FOR-PD or FRI, each of which fully satisfies Competency 2
of the Reading Endorsement, the other indicators are drawn from across all the
competencies, but do not fully meet any one in its entirety. Therefore, Just Read,
Florida!, in cooperation with FLaRE, is writing CAR-PD PLUS, a 150 hour professional
development bundle that will include any indicators not originally included in CAR-PD.
2

Upon completion of both bundles, the teacher will have completed the Reading
Endorsement.
11.
?
What role does my FLaRE coordinator play as we move forward with CAR-PD?
FLaRE coordinators have already trained hundreds of facilitators in the spring and
summer of 2007 in the CAR-PD 60 Hour Face-to-Face Academy curriculum and are still
available to provide facilitator training for your district. CAR-PD is not a train-the-
trainer model, so new CAR-PD facilitators would need to be trained by a FLaRE
coordinator. If you have questions about upcoming facilitator training, please contact
your FLaRE coordinator. If you do not have a FLaRE coordinator, please contact Betsy
McClure at FLaRE ~ emcclure@mail.ucf.edu.
12.
?
As a CAR-PD facilitator, how do I secure the training notebooks for CAR-PD?
Please place your order for teacher materials at least one month prior to your trainings.
You may order these through your FLaRE coordinator, and they will ensure that the
materials reach you in a timely manner. If you do not have a FLaRE coordinator, you
may contact Betsy McClure at FLaRE ~ emcclure@mail.ucf.edu.
13.
?
Is there a required textbook for the CAR-PD 60 Hour Face-to-Face Academy?
Yes. The required textbook is
Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas
by Sharon
Kane. The cost is $51.00, but ordering in bulk reduces the cost. The publisher is
Holcomb Hathaway Publishers, Inc., at (480) 991-7881 or www.hh-pub.com. Just Read,
Florida! is asking that the school or district sponsor the cost of the text for the CAR-PD
60 Hour Face-to-Face Academy.
14.
?
I have not budgeted in my district or school for the cost of this text. Is there
assistance available for the 2007-2008 school year?
Yes. For the 2007-2008 school year, if a district or school has budgetary constraints, Just
Read, Florida! and FLaRE, to every extent possible, will assist with all or a portion of the
cost of the texts. If a school or district needs assistance with the provision of the text,
please call your FLaRE Coordinator. If a district does not have a FLaRE coordinator,
they may contact Betsy McClure at FLaRE ~ emcclure@mail.ucf.edu. Please place this
order as soon as possible, as there are limited texts in stock and a reorder may be
necessary.
15.
?
As a CAR-PD 60 Hour Face-to-Face Academy facilitator, am I allowed to alter or
adjust the time frame for the Academy?
Yes. The Academy can be offered over an entire semester, with teachers having reading
assignments each week to be discussed face-to-face in class. The summer training at the
Rosen was compressed out of necessity, and even so, 20 hours of follow up were
necessary. If offered over a semester, there will be no need for the 20 hour follow up.
