Just Read, Florida! Reading Endorsement Professional Development On-Line
Courses for Competencies One and Three
I
n our continued effort to provide teachers with high quality Reading Endorsement professional
development at little or no cost, the Just Read, Florida! office is pleased to announce the
availability of a total of 3,200 free registrations between two online courses entitled Foundations
of Language and Cognition (FOLAC) and Applied Data Analysis for Educational Leaders
(ADAPT). Both of these online courses are offered through North East Florida Educational
Consortium (NEFEC). Please note that FOLAC fully satisfies competency one and ADAPT
fully satisfies competency three of the Reading Endorsement. Additional information about the
FOLAC and ADAPT professional development, including training goals and objectives,
assignment schedule, and technical requirements are available online at
http://www.nefec.org/adapt and http://www.nefec.org/folac.
As there are still a number of middle and high school educators teaching reading classes this year
who are considered out of field because they have not received the Reading Endorsement or the
full K-12 Reading certification, we will allow these teachers a two week lead time before
registration is confirmed for all other educators, including reading coaches, school
administrators, district staff and elementary teachers. Registration for all educators opens on

The textbook for ADAPT is
Developing and Using Classroom Assessments
,
Third Edition
, by
Albert Oosterhof.
We are asking that, if possible, each district absorb the cost of the
textbook for their teachers enrolled in the class.
NEFEC has 500 texts in stock and can
reorder. The cost of the textbook, if purchased from NEFEC, is $40.00. The textbook is also
available through a variety of online bookstores.
There is no required textbook for FOLAC.

Once registration is closed, we will notify district Reading Endorsement contacts of the
registrants from their district so that the appropriate number of books can be secured. You may
wish for teachers to pick up their textbooks at the district office, or you may choose to deliver
them to the teachers at their respective schools by courier, if that service is available.
If a
district is unable to purchase the textbook, please let Garnette Knapp know immediately so
that registrants can be notified and be given the option to purchase or borrow the book
themselves or drop the class. She can be contacted at (386) 329-3800 or by email at
knappg@nefec.org.
Districts may wish to consider purchasing sets of books to be loaned to
teachers for the duration of the class.
If teachers wish to take ADAPT for college credit, Florida State University periodically offers
this online course. Teachers must enter as a degree seeking or special student and pay the full
tuition. Learning Systems Institute at FSU can provide more information on this option, and that
office can be reached at (850) 644-2570.
Just Read, Florida! is not sponsoring university
tuition.
We are very excited about this opportunity for your teachers. If you have questions about the
registration process, please contact Garnette Knapp at (386) 329-3800 or by e-mail at
knappg@nefec.org. If you have other questions, please contact Barbara Elzie at (850) 245-0503
or by e-mail at barbara.elzie@fldoe.org.
