Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Teachers
Teaching Elementary (K-6) or Alternate Achievement Standards
Core Academic Courses
An ESE teacher who is the teacher of record for an elementary core academic course or an alternate
achievement standards core academic course must m
elementary teachers listed below, in addition to having the appropriate ESE certification.
New ESE Teachers
(No Teaching Experience)
Experienced ESE Teachers
(At Least One Year of Full Time
Teaching Experience)
Requirement 1
A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited or
approved institution
A bachelor’s or higher degree from an accredited

Requirement 2
A valid Florida three-year Temporary in an appropriate
ESE area(s) to match the ESE table in the Florida
Course Code Directory
A valid Florida three-year Temporary or five-year
Professional Certificate in an appropriate ESE
area(s) to match the ESE table in the Florida
Course Code Directory
Requirement 3
Option 1:
A passing score on the Florida K-6, 1-6, or
PK-3 subject area exam (SAE) appropriate for the
elementary grade level(s) assigned
or
Option 2:
A valid American Board for Certification of
Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) Passport Certificate in
Elementary Education.
or
Option 3:
A valid Florida Professional Certificate
appropriate for the elementary grade level(s) assigned.
(requires a passing Florida SAE or reciprocity from
another state)
Option 1:
A passing score on the Florida K-6, 1-6,
or PK-3 subject area exam (SAE) appropriate for
or
Option 2:
A valid ABCTE Passport Certificate in
Elementary Education or a valid Early or Middle
Childhood Generalist National Board for
Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
Certificate appropriate for the grade levels.

Option 3:
Verification from another state of
passing an appropriate subject area exam for the
elementary grade level(s) assigned (transferable
from out of state using the out of state SAE
verification form)
or
Option 4:
Having met the requirements for a
HOUSSE plan that is appropriate for the
elementary grade level(s) assigned (transferable
from out of state using the out of state HOUSSE
verification form)
Note: The obsolete Early Childhood Education and Primary Education K-3 certification levels may meet these
requirements for some teachers.
