DRIVER LICENSE/SCHOOL ATTENDANCE PROGRAM REPORTS,
2006-2007 Fourth Quarter and Annual Reports

In the Department of Education’s continued effort to improve student attendance and to
improve student rates of learning, please find attached a copy of the report from the
Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) for the fourth quarter of 2006-
2007. This report now includes manual additions and deletions by Department personnel. The
names of students transmitted to the DHSMV will be mailed under separate cover to your
district’s Director of Student Services. Our staff reviewed and compiled the information into a
state summary that reflects transactions processed for school districts from April 1, 2007,
    through June 30, 2007 (

    (Attachment 2)
. DHSMV reports that during the 2006-2007 school year:

12,110 students received Notices of Intent to Suspend Driving Privileges

26,327 Notices of Intent to Suspend Driving Privileges were deleted

33,681 Non-Licensed drivers received notices that they were not eligible to apply and receive
    driver licenses

    70,708 Non-Licensed/Non-Compliance Orders were deleted

    10,823 Suspension Orders were issued

The Technical Assistance Paper on Implementation of Attendance Requirements for Minors to
Maintain Their Driving Privilege directs school districts to transmit student data to DHSMV at
least once a week. Implementation of these requirements can improve district dropout and
attendance rates. Data revealed that less than five percent of students who had their driver
licenses suspended for excessive absences received a second suspension. Therefore, 95 percent
of students who received a first suspension were never issued a second suspension for non-
    compliance with school attendance requirements.
If you have questions regarding your data, please contact Donald Klein, DHSMV, at 850. 617.
