FROM:
Cheri Pierson Yecke, Ph.D.
SUBJECT: Certification Requirements for Athletic Coaches
This information is sent in support of employment of highly qualified and effective personnel
within the school district. Section 1012.55, Florida Statutes, requires that each person who is
employed as an athletic coach in any public school must hold a valid Temporary, Professional,
or Athletic Coaching Certificate issued by the State Department of Education. The Athletic
Coaching Certificate may be used for either part-time or full-time athletic coaching positions. A
certificate is not required if the coach is an unpaid volunteer who is not an employee of the
school district.
It is imperative that each paid athletic coach hold an appropriate valid certificate
and
that a
fingerprinting background check has been completed. District and site administrators must
ensure that proper measures are employed to fully screen and certify paid athletic coaches.
Failure to comply with this statutory requirement can result in disciplinary action against a
responsible individual’s Florida Educator Certificate. Each district is encouraged to review its
procedures and to make any necessary changes to ensure the proper and required certification
of athletic coaches.
