The Florida Reading Initiative (FRI) is a K-12 reading achievement
initiative that provides professional development, support and follow-up for
comprehensive school reform of instructional programs. The Florida
Reading Initiative’s primary goal is to significantly improve reading
instruction and ultimately achieve 100% literacy for all students in Florida.
FRI focuses on providing accelerated instructional interventions for
struggling readers and best practices in reading instructional strategies for all
students.
Participating districts agree to uphold the integrity of the Florida Reading
Initiative by meeting the following requirements:

Committing to the participation of a minimum of 3 schools beginning
summer, 2007. Feeder patterns are given priority.

Completing an application of intent.
•
?
Developing a district reading leadership team to coordinate with Just
Read, Florida! and its partners.
•
?
Committing to attending selected trainings along with principals and
teachers.
•
?
Committing to consistency in administrative assignments at

participating schools.

?
Supporting reading coaches, principals, and leadership teams in

attending professional development throughout the year.
?

?
Providing funding for a full-time reading coach at each participating
school.
Participating schools agree to uphold the integrity of the Florida Reading
Initiative and meet the following requirements:

Leadership teams attend a 3-day Reading Institute during the summer
of 2007.
•
?
Principals and leadership teams participate in ongoing professional
development throughout the year.
•
?
Schools apply for full implementation of FRI in January, 2008.
•
?
School principal and a minimum of 85% of the faculty attend the
Summer Reading Academy in June, 2008.
•
?
Principal and selected teachers commit to observing in existing FRI
schools during the 2007-2008 school year.
•
?
Teachers complete the online component of FRI between January and
June, 2008 (optional).
•
?
Continue participating in all components of FRI, including dedicated
time for staff planning, ongoing professional development (including
principal and coach cadre meetings) and frequent student progress
monitoring.
