SUBJECT: REVISED FLORIDA MATHEMATICS CONTENT STANDARDS

AVAILABLE FOR ONLINE REVIEW AND COMMENT

The writing process for the new Florida Mathematics Content Standards is quickly coming to a close.
For six months, numerous stakeholders have given their time and resources to revising the Florida
Mathematics Content Standards.

We are now pleased to post the draft of the new Florida Mathematics Content Standards online for
public review and comments.

On September 18-19, 2006, college professors, teachers from the entire K-20 spectrum across
Florida, business representatives, and other mathematics professionals convened in Tallahassee,
Florida, to listen to a panel of experts on mathematics standards and to develop a framework for
revising the Florida Mathematics standards. The names and positions of the professionals and panel
of experts are online at www.flstandards.org.

Florida mathematics experts developed the framework for mathematics content standards, which
includes:

K-8 mathematics content standards that are specified by grade level. These content standards
are guided by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Focal Points
(released September 13, 2006). These guidelines will greatly reduce the number of grade
level expectations, now called standards, for each grade level while increasing rigor. Sample
mathematics problems are included with the content standards.
