Use of Individual Academic Plans (IAPs) in Department of Juvenile Justice

The purpose of this document is to provide clarification regarding the use of IAPs to meet
the requirements for student progress monitoring plans (PMPs) in DJJ educational
facilities.
As the PMP and IAP are closely aligned, the individual academic plan can
be used to meet the requirements for student progress monitoring plans.
The following table compares IAP requirements to student progress monitoring plan
requirements.

Individual Academic Plan
Must be developed for students who score
below the level specified in district school
board policy in reading, writing, and math
or below the level specified by the
Commissioner on statewide assessments.
Must be developed for all students in DJJ
programs based on student entry
assessments, statewide assessment results,
and educational history. Must be developed
within 22 days of student entry into
detention or 15 days of student entry into a
residential or day treatment program.
Progress Monitoring Plan
Individual Academic Plan
Plan will address academic, literacy, and
life skills and include provisions for
intensive remedial instruction in deficient
areas.
Plan will address academic, literacy, and
life skills. The IAP must include
:
(1) specific and individualized long-
term goals and short-term
instructional academic and career
objectives
(2) remedial strategies and/or tutorial
instruction
(3) evaluation procedures
(4) schedule for determining progress
toward meeting the goals and
instructional and career objectives
A student who is not meeting the school
district or state requirements for
proficiency in reading and math shall be
covered by one of the following plans to
target instruction:
(1) federally required student plan
such as an individual education
plan
(2) a schoolwide system of progress
monitoring for all students
(3) an individualized progress
monitoring plan
All students in DJJ educational facilities
will have one of the following:
(1) individual academic plan
(2) individual educational plan
