Urban Inclusion Center (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) is seeking applications for a
technical assistance center aimed at promoting placement of urban school children with
disabilities in general education classrooms. The center will identify and help schools implement
effective practices.
DEADLINE
: September 9, 2002.
FUNDING
: $700,000 for first-year funding of one cooperative agreement award. The project
period is up to five years.
ELIGIBILITY
: State and local education agencies; other public agencies; higher education
institutions; private nonprofit organizations; and for-profit firms.

Healthy Schools, Healthy Communities (HRSA)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) will seek
applications for school-based health centers that serve areas or populations with programs due to
expire in fiscal year 2003. Projects provide comprehensive primary and preventive health care
services, including mental health, oral health and ancillary services, on a full time basis in the
school or on school grounds. Services must be culturally sensitive, family oriented and tailored
to meet the needs of youths, adolescents and the community. School principals, school boards,
parents and providers decide what services to provide.
DEADLINE
: Deadlines vary according to current project’s expiration dates. Applications are
due 120 days before the expiration date.
FUNDING
: $4.2 million for 14 awards averaging $300,000 a year each for one to five years.
ELIGIBILITY
: Current grantees and new applicants proposing to serve the populations being
served by existing programs. Applicants must be public or private nonprofit entities.

Soccer Foundation
PROGRAM
: On September 15, 2002, the U.S. Soccer Foundation will release applications for
its 2003 funding cycle. Projects must address the foundation’s priorities, which support long-
term development of soccer; soccer programming in previously unserved areas; gender equity,
health, physical education, and other education opportunities through soccer; participation of the
physically, mentally, or economically disadvantaged; or the construction of fields and soccer-
specific infrastructure. Applicants do not need to own real property (e.g., soccer or other athletic
fields or complexes) in order to receive a grant; however, if applicants do not own such property,
they must have a minimum 10-years land use agreement in place.

: December 1, 2002.
FUNDING
: Varies – grants will take the form of cash, equipment or service donations, or a
combination of any of these.
ELIGIBILITY
: For-profit and nonprofit soccer organizations; civic groups, municipalities, or
governing bodies for soccer-specific projects.

ASCAP Foundation – Music Education
PROGRAM
: The ASCAP Foundation is dedicated to nurturing the musical talent of tomorrow,
preserving the legacy of the past, and sustaining the creative incentive for today’s musically
gifted through a variety of educational, professional, and humanitarian programs and activities
which serve the entire music community. Grants will go to nonprofits working in music
education and talent development programs; all programs should support music education
programs for aspiring songwriters and composers and must have a composition component. In
addition, all programs should be in accordance with foundation objectives. Funds may not be
used for general operating support, annual giving campaigns, capital support, endowments,
recording, or performance or production funding.
DEADLINE
: October 15, 2002.
FUNDING
: Up to $5,000.
ELIGIBILITY
: Nonprofit organizations engaging in music education and talent development
programs.

American School Board Journal Magna Awards
PROGRAM
: The Magna Awards, sponsored by the American School Board Journal and
Sodexho School Services, honor outstanding school programs, led by school boards, that boost
student achievement and community involvement.
DEADLINE
: October 31, 2002.
FUNDING
: One award of $2,500, two awards of $1,000 each. All winners will be featured in a
special supplement to the American School Board Journal and invited to attend an awards
luncheon and conference in San Francisco in April 2003.

Eastpak/Jansport
PROGRAM
: Eastpak and Jansport, manufacturers of backpacks and other outdoor gear, run a
limited grants and donation program serving nonprofits. Both companies accept applications for
donations on an ongoing basis.

National Art Education Association
PROGRAM
: The National Art Education Association (NAEA) offers several programs for art
educators who are NAEA members. All award winners receive a certificate and national
recognition. More than 20 awards will be distributed this year, including the Distinguished
Service Award (within the profession), Distinguished Service Award (outside the profession),
National Art Educator Award, Regional Art Educator Award, and the Retired Art Educator
Award.

Aerospace Education Foundation
PROGRAM
: The Aerospace Education Foundation offers grants to promote aerospace
education activities in the classroom from kindergarten through twelfth grades. The Program
encourages development of innovative aerospace activities within the prescribed curriculum.
The program also encourages establishing an active relationship between the school and the local
Air Force Association organization.

: November 15, 2002.

Handspring Foundation Cash Grants
PROGRAM
: Handspring Foundation Cash Grants makes cash grants to non-profit
organizations that focus on pre K-12 education or issues directly related to at-risk youth. The
foundation is particularly interested in programs that are directed toward literacy, mentoring and
peer counseling, school-based programs targeting high-risk youth, after-school programs
targeting high-risk youth that utilize the arts, technology, and sports, and children at-risk of
education failure.

: November 1, 2002.

: Range from $1,000 to $25,000 per grant.

: Non-profit organizations.

Managed Derivatives Research Foundation
PROGRAM
: The Foundation for Managed Derivatives Research is accepting applications for
grants to support economic, business, and financial research on the use of derivatives as an
investment-management tool.

American Honda Foundation
PROGRAM
: American Honda Foundation provides grants for scientific education that
encompasses both the physical life sciences and mathematics, and environmental education.
DEADLINE

: $50,000.

Coca-Cola Foundation Inc.
PROGRAM
: The Coca-Cola Foundation Inc., offers grants for educational programs for
minority students, and educational programs.

Partnership For Excellence In Jewish Education
PROGRAM
: The Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE) works to strengthen
Jewish day school education and is currently accepting applications for their challenge grant
program to help local communities create new Jewish elementary and middle day schools.
DEADLINE
: September 20, 2002, for required pre-applications. Solicited applications will be
due December 13, 2002.

FUNDING
: Up to $275,000 each for a five year planning and initial operation grant. Funds
must be matched dollar-for-dollar from non-tuition revenue and may not be used for capital
expenditures.
ELIGIBILITY
:
Challenge grants are awarded to help establish new schools in locations where
there are none currently or open additional schools in areas where a new school is needed and
can be supported. PEJE does not fund any initiatives that may damage existing day schools.
Funding begins once a board or organizing committee has been established, ideally a full two
years before the new school opens.

American Contract Bridge League Foundation
PROGRAM
: The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL)—a 160,000 member organization
focuses on the game of contract bridge—created this foundation to make grants for educational
projects that will make bridge a game played by people of all ages and walks of life.
DEADLINE
: Proposals should be received at least three months or more prior to the program’s
scheduled start date.
FUNDING
: Vary. Recents grants have ranged from $150 to over $50,000 each. Most grants
are small.
ELIGIBILITY
: The foundation makes grants to schools, nursing homes, hospitals, community
centers and local ACBL units; and will support both local and national programs.

JM Foundation
PROGRAM
: The JM Foundation makes grants in two areas: health and rehabilitation; and
education and public policy research.
DEADLINE
: None. Requests are reviewed within a month of receipt, and the board meets to
make funding decisions in May and October.
FUNDING
: The foundation made nearly $1 million in grants last year.
ELIGIBILITY
: Public charities defined by IRS sections 501( c )(3), 509(a)(1) or
170(b)(1)(a)(vi). Grants are generally not made to government agencies, including public
schools.
