District Submission of High School Major Areas of Interest
?
Requirements
Beginning with students entering their first year of high school in 2007-2008, each
student will be required to identify a major area of interest that includes four of the eight
credits that are in addition to the 16 core curriculum credits required to graduate.
Students may revise major areas of interest each year as part of annual course
registration processes. Annually, by October 1, the district school board shall approve
major areas of interest for the next school year and submit the list of majors to the
Commissioner of Education for approval.
1.
?
Submission must include a minimum of four full-year, one credit bearing courses
(this can include one credit obtained through a practicum activity). Two half-credit
bearing courses can be combined for one full year of credit in the same area.
2.
?
If the courses must be successfully completed in a sequential order, the major area
of interest form must state so and identify the sequence.
3.
?
The district agrees to closely monitor all practicum requirements, and the
Department of Education may, at any time, audit practicum proposals.
4.
?
A student must earn four full credits to graduate with a complete major area of
interest.
5.
?
Major areas of interest must be available to all students, including students with
disabilities.
All courses in the major area of interest must be in addition to the 16 core curriculum
credits for graduation. Major areas of interest can include one credit for a practicum, as
described in the Course Code Directory.
All major areas that are within one content area or one career and technical area have
been approved by the Commissioner of Education, but the district must report what
major areas of interest are being offered at each school that serves high school-level
students.
All districts must submit the major areas of interest that will be offered to students at
each district school serving 9
th
grade students in 2007-2008. The Department is
developing a web-based submission form that will enable the major areas of interest
being offered to be pulled into tools such as FACTS.org, where students can develop
career plans including a possible major area of interest during the middle grades. This
web-based reporting tool will be divided into three parts: Part A for submitting major
areas of interest that have already been approved by the Commissioner; Part B for
submitting new major areas of interest that are integrated by combining courses from
different content areas; and Part C for submitting major areas of interest for students
with disabilities. An example of what this tool will look like is attached. The timeline for
the tool to be completed is August 31. The link to the tool will be provided at
http://www.fldoe.org/APlusPlus.

District Submission of High School Major Areas of Interest
?
Districts are encouraged to survey students to define areas of interest that match their
needs. Additionally, districts are encouraged to combine courses related to an area of
interest from different content, career and technical, dual enrollment and virtual course
areas. These integrated major areas of interest would require an official submission
form in order to track student participation and completion.
State-Approved Major Areas of Interest
•
?
All major areas of interest that include four or more courses from the same content
area of the Basic Education - Grades 9-12 and the Career and Technical Education
sections of the course code directory have been approved by the Commissioner.
(Example: Language Arts: four courses of Language Arts in addition to the four
required for high school graduation would be an approved Language Arts major area
of interest.)
•
?
Additionally, within many of these content sections are subtopics that include four or
more courses that could also be a major area of interest and have been approved by
the Commissioner. (Example: Language Arts – sub topic Media: four courses from
this section within Language Arts would make up a Media major area of interest.)
•
?
The Department has also designed major areas of interest for students with
disabilities working toward a special diploma.
The list of state-approved major areas of interest follows on the next two pages. Each
district will have to report into the web-based reporting system those major areas of
interest approved by the Commissioner of Education that will be offered at each school
in the district that serves students in grade 9.
Integrated Major Areas of Interest that Must be Submitted to the Commissioner of
Education for Approval
Districts are strongly encouraged to implement major areas of interest that are
developed due to interests of the students in the community. A major area of interest
can be a combination of courses from different content areas, career and technical
areas, and the fine arts. These are called integrated major areas of interest and may be
unique to a school or district, but once approved by the Commissioner of Education,
they are available for all districts to implement. For a district to implement an integrated
major area of interest, the district superintendent must submit the proposed major area
of interest into the web-based reporting tool no later than October 1 of each school year
for it to be approved for implementation the following school year. (Example of an
integrated major area of interest: Communications including classes in debate, speech,
radio broadcasting, and journalism.)

Major Areas of Interest for Students with Disabilities Working Toward a Special
Diploma
The Department has developed and approved major areas of interest for students
working toward special diplomas. Typical students working on a special diploma are
those students with significant cognitive disabilities. Because these students are

appropriate for their level of instruction.
