Subject:
REVISIONS TO IMPLEMENTATION OF ATTENDANCE
REQUIREMENTS FOR MINORS TO MAINTAIN THEIR DRIVING
PRIVILEGE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE PAPER
The attached Technical Assistance Paper (TAP) provides information regarding changes to
previously published policies and new interpretations of policy to school personnel
implementing the attendance-related driver license requirements. This TAP replaces the
previous Technical Assistance Paper FY 2001-5, dated January 2001.
Pursuant to Section 232.19, Florida Statutes, the superintendent must report to the Department of
Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) the names, birthdates, gender, and social
security numbers of students between the ages of 14 and 18 who accumulate 15 unexcused
absences within 90 calendar days, or who withdraw from school with a withdrawal code that is
calculated in the dropout rate. The legislation further provides that those minors who fail to
satisfy attendance requirements will be ineligible for driving privileges.
