Summer Institute for Transition
The Florida Department of Education has established a goal for highest student achievement
which aligns workforce education programs with the skill requirements of the new economy. To
support this goal, we are pleased to provide information about a Summer Institute for Transition
being sponsored by the Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, the Career
Development and Transition Project, the Hiring Practices Initiative, The Transition Center at the
University of Florida and the Florida Developmental Disabilities Council, Inc.
The Summer Institute is planned for June 26-30, 2006, and will provide participants with a wide
variety of training opportunities. The Summer Institute will be held at the Hyatt Regency
Jacksonville Riverfront, 225 East Coast Line Drive, Jacksonville, Florida. The Summer Institute
is appropriate for middle and high school teachers, paraprofessionals, job coaches, guidance
counselors, and other school district personnel with responsibilities for implementing and

supervising all facets of transition; interagency collaboration; and career assessment,
development and placement for transition-aged students with disabilities.
The purposes of the Summer Institute are to:
?
provide training on transition requirements, pre-planning activities and interagency
collaboration to ensure that school district personnel and other transition stakeholders
have the latest information and resources to effectively implement transition services and
develop meaningful transition individual educational plans (IEP) leading to improved
student outcomes
?
provide strategies through resource mapping that can enable local districts and
communities to tap into previously unidentified or under-identified resources for
implementing transition services
?
provide current information and training tools in order for school district personnel to
implement effective career assessment, development and preparation programs for
students with disabilities functioning at independent, supported and participatory levels,
as well as students pursuing standard diplomas, who need assistance with career
development and placement
?
increase the number of school district personnel trained in the provision of supported
competitive employment and other current modes of employment in order to expand the
range of employment-related options for students with disabilities
?
share requirements and practical strategies for implementing and supervising career
development and placement courses and programs
