Family Involvement Workshops

Numerous research studies have shown that schools with well-structured, consistent
parent involvement programs can realize profound benefits for students, teachers, and
administrators. To assist Florida’s schools in working effectively with families, the
Department of Education’s Office of Family Involvement, together with The Florida
Partnership for Family Involvement in Education, is pleased to bring you a series of
workshops to be held throughout the state in 2002-2003. School district personnel and
related educational agencies are invited to participate in each of the following:

PASSport to Success
(Parents Assuring Students Success)
- This fun and

support, structuring the home environment, study skills, homework, note-taking, helping
children prepare for tests, developing thinking skills, and teaching reading skills. School
personnel who have implemented
PASSport to Success
report that parents are excited
and motivated about helping their children succeed.

National Network of Partnership Schools Training
- The NNPS workshop will assist
attendees in planning family and community involvement activities that support their
school improvement goals, with a particular focus on academic achievement.
Attendees should bring their school improvement plans to the workshop. The training
will address the PTA National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs,
based on Dr. Joyce Epstein’s research.

Family Involvement Leadership Series
- This two-part series will provide participants
with resources, effective research-based strategies, and success stories in the areas of
Reading and Best Practices in Student Achievement. Promoting the "Just Read!
Florida" initiative, the first conference, "Reading and Families" will provide participants
with current data and programs to increase family reading. The second conference,
"Best Practices in Student Achievement" consists of hands-on sessions to equip
educators with proven practices about family involvement issues such as parent-teacher
conferences, involving the "hard-to-reach" parent, and tools that raise academic
achievement.

These free workshops and conferences will offer best practices and school
improvement strategies that schools and educational agencies can utilize immediately.
Participation will offer schools the opportunity to network and exchange ideas and
experiences regarding family involvement.

You will find attached to this memo a registration form for each of the conferences being
held this year. For more specific information regarding each workshop, please contact
the Office of Family Involvement at (850) 487-3521.
