Train-the-Trainer
Domestic Security for School Districts
Course
The safety and security of Florida schools continues to be a concern of all educational
stakeholders. Although Florida public schools have not been targeted to date, nor are there any
known, direct, or credible threats against any potential target in Florida, schools are included in
the Florida Domestic Security Strategy. This strategy is a comprehensive approach to ensuring
Florida will address all known domestic security vulnerabilities.
In an effort to support schools, a train-the-trainer
Domestic Security for School Districts
course is
available and open, free of charge, to school district personnel. The course is designed for
district personnel to become instructors and to take the training back to their district to fit their
district’s needs. The course is being offered by the School District of Palm Beach County Police
Department, and is sponsored by the Florida Department of Education, through a grant from the
Department of Homeland Security. Specific dates are March 14-16, 2006; March 28-30, 2006;
and April 4-6, 2006.

The course is in a “train-the-trainer” format, with each participant receiving a master copy of the
training materials to use in training their peers. The course includes the following topics:
•
Terrorism and Weapons of Mass Destruction
•
Vulnerability and Threat Assessment
•
Working the Crisis Response Plan
•
National Incident Management System (NIMS)
•
Training Modules
Of particular interest is the National Incident Management System (NIMS) training. School
districts will soon be receiving the Department of Education’s revised “Statewide Policy for
Strengthening Domestic Security in Florida’s Public Schools,” which includes required and
recommended training for key district staff to ensure compliance with Florida’s NIMS
requirements. Access to many federal grant funds and programs will require NIMS compliance,
so it is important your district is aware of and complies with the new requirements, if receiving
these federal funds.

Domestic Security for School Districts
course, please click on the link below:

Lodging is included for counties over 50 miles from Palm Beach County: two persons per room,
three-night stay. The dates of the hotel reservations will be from the night before the first day of
training through the night before the last day of training. A confirmation letter will be sent to
each registered attendee with additional information and directions.
We encourage you to have appropriate staff take advantage of this training opportunity. If you
have any questions, please contact Julie Collins, Office of Safe and Healthy Schools.
