SUBJECT:
SCHOOL LIBRARY MEDIA MONTH 2006
Governor Jeb Bush extends his greetings and best wishes for the observance of School Library
Media Month, April 2006. Each year our school districts and Florida citizens celebrate this
month to highlight the services, programs, and resources provided by school library media
centers. The celebratory month also provides opportunities across the state for highlighting
school library media services contributions to improving the quality of education.
Research findings in the Florida statewide library media study entitled,
Making the Grade: The
Status of School Library Media Centers in the Sunshine State and How They Contribute to
Student Achievement,
showed that effective school library media programs help students
function successfully in school, prepare them for lifelong learning, and enhance their reading
enjoyment. Additionally, it is appropriate that this month designated for recognition of school
library media services in Florida includes National Library Week, which recognizes the impact of
all libraries on the nation’s citizens.
Your support of activities planned by your school library media specialists is needed to make
School Library Media Month in Florida a success. A copy of the proclamation is attached.
