Emergency
Operations
It is time to update the emergency information for our community college system.
We continue to work closely with the Florida Board of Education and the Division
of Emergency Management to assure that, in the unfortunate event that one or
more of our institutions are affected by weather or other unforeseen events, we
will be prepared and can assist as needed.
It was only a few months after we requested this information from you last year,
that Broward Community College had a tragic murder/suicide incident on its
campus that attracted national media coverage. As the situation unfolded we were
able to contact Dr. Holcombe and his staff to offer assistance and to keep the
Secretary, Commissioner, Governor and key legislators informed of the situation.
Barbara Doran continues to represent the community college system on Secretary
Jim Horne’s emergency management committee. This group is responsible for
maintaining current information, to be used in emergency response, on key
individuals with roles in a crisis situation (from institutions, divisions, Florida
Board of Education office, Commissioner’s office and appropriate emergency
operations personnel). Below is a request for some detailed information for our

Information Needed from the Community College System:
1. Current Personnel Information – to be used in time of crisis. This list allows contact day
or night, weekend or holidays. Names, addresses (office and home), telephone and fax
numbers (office, home, cell, pagers), and email addresses of key personnel who
participate in crisis response. These should include, but are not limited to:
President,
Information Officer (media relations),
Critical Incident Commander (responsible at the time of an incident of
coordinating response),
Liaison Officer (works with outside emergency resources),
Facilities Manager (individual who has responsibility for and knowledge of the
physical plant of the entire college), and
Safety Officer.
If there are others who have key responsibilities during a crisis, please provide this
information on them as well (attached is a format that would assist us in the collection of
this information).
2. Emergency Plan – A copy of your most recent emergency plan. We received copies from
all institutions last year. If you have updated or changed your plan since then, please
send us a hard copy of your most recent version.
