PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE), National Institute on Disability and
Rehabilitation Research will fund a rehabilitation research and training center (RRTC) on
disability in rural communities.
DEADLINE
: September 12, 2002.
FUNDING
: $600,000 a year for one award for five years.
ELIGIBILITY
: States, public and private nonprofit and for-profit organizations, higher
education institutions and American Indian tribes and organizations. RRTC’s operate in
collaboration with higher education institutions or providers of rehabilitation or other appropriate
services.

Technical Assistance for Juvenile Delinquency Prevention (DoJ/OJJDP)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ), Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency
Prevention (OJJDP) seeks applications for the Targeted Community Action Planning (TCAP)
Technical Assistance Program, which will provide intensive training and technical assistance to
at least 15 selective jurisdictions to help them develop and deliver a targeted response to their
most pressing juvenile justice issues.
DEADLINE
: September 3, 2002.
FUNDING
: One award of up to $800,000 for the first year. The project period is three years.
ELIGIBILITY
: Public and private nonprofit agencies, organizations, institutions or individuals.
For-profit organizations must waive any profit or fee.

Gang Resistance Education and Training (Treasury/ATF)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Treasury (Treasury), Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and
Firearms (ATF) is inviting cooperative agreement applications to educate youths about the
dangers associated with joining street gangs and participating in violent crime, under the Gang
Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program. The GREAT program trains police
officers to provide instruction to elementary and middle school students in gang prevention and
anti-violence techniques. Components include school-based education; after school, summer
education and booster classes; and parental involvement.
DEADLINE
: September 30, 2002.
FUNDING
: Applicants will compete in five categories based on population size.
ELIGIBILITY
: State, county, tribal and municipal law enforcement agencies.

American Express Philanthropic Program
PROGRAM
: Financial services provider American Express, through company donations and
their foundation, supports nonprofit organizations working in three areas: community service,
cultural heritage, and economic independence.
DEADLINE
: Ongoing. American Express employees must recommend community service
applicants.
FUNDING
: In 2001, the company and foundation made grants totaling $30.5 million. Priority
is given to grants in cities where American Express has significant business and employee

PROGRAM
: The National Organization on Disability (NOD) makes these awards to honor
communities that comprehensively support the involvement of citizens with disabilities in
community life.
DEADLINE
: December 31, 2002.
FUNDING
: A $25,000 award will be presented to the mayor of the winning city to be used to
further efforts at closing participation gaps for citizens with disabilities.

: Project Learning Tree (PLT) – a preK-12 environmental education program of the
American Forest Foundation, a nonprofit education and conservation organization that is part of
an association of small, non-industrial forest owners (the American Tree Farm System) – makes
these grants to educators who have participated in a PLT workshop.
