Approving Menus for Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) Sponsors
This document supports the mission of Florida’s K-20 education system to increase the proficiency of
all students within one seamless, efficient system. Through this and other modes of assistance, Food
and Nutrition Management (FNM) supports the State Board of Education’s goal to deliver quality,
efficient services (Section 1008.31(3), Florida Statutes).
The purpose of this technical assistance note is to clarify FNM’s policy on approving menus for
sponsors of the Summer Food Service Program. FNM’s policy requires that registered dieticians on
staff review and approve all menus prior to the approval of the sponsor’s initial Application,
Agreement, and Policy Statement. This menu review and evaluation will be based on the United
States Department of Agriculture’s meal pattern for the meal service(s) the sponsor selected.
Sponsors who are contracting with an approved food service management company or the local school
district should keep in mind that the contracting vendor must be knowledgeable of the meal pattern
requirements to meet FNM requirements.
