Providing Citizens Opportunities
 
PROGRAM:
AmeriCorps is a national service program that provides
opportunities for citizens to serve their country and community through local
non-profit agencies. Each year participants of AmeriCorps, called members,
join a local program and provide specific, intensive community services such
as tutoring students who need extra help, teaching community residents
about issues directly affecting them and other services that strengthen
communities. The grant award covers a period of three years, renewable
annually, subject to review of performance, availability of federal funds and
progress toward sustainability.
 
DEADLINE:
October 17, 2005, Close Of Business.
 
FUNDING:
Up to $12,600 per AmeriCorps member MSY (Member-service
year).

FUNDING PERIOD:
Programs will be funded for a three-year period
between August 2006 and December 2009. Match Requirements: First year
of funding: 33% of operating costs and 15% of member support costs.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Local non-profit 501(3) organizations and faith-based
organizations, state and local government, and education institutions.

Higher Education Challenge Grants Program / Cooperative
State Research, Education, and Extension Service / U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Enabling Colleges and Universities the Opportunity to Provide Quality Education
 
PROGRAM:
The Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension
Service is seeking applications for the Higher Education Challenge Grants
Program (HEC) for fiscal year 2006. The purpose of HEC is to strengthen
institutional capabilities by improving teaching programs in the food and
agricultural sciences or in rural economic, community and business
development. Programs should include curriculum, faculty, scientific
instrumentation, instructional delivery systems, and student recruitment and
retention.
 
DEADLINE:
February 2, 2006.
 
FUNDING:
Awards range from $150,000 to $400,000.
 
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Public and State controlled institutions of higher education.

Instructional Materials Development / National Science
Foundation (NSF)
Developing Instructional Materials
 
PROGRAM:
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is seeking applications
from those interested in instructional material development to enhance
knowledge in science, technology, engineering and math, as well as thinking
skills and problem-solving abilities, in students from pre-kindergarten
through high school.
 
DEADLINE:
November 14, 2005 for required preliminary proposals; March
13, 2006 for applications.
 
FUNDING:
A total of $7 million for 15 to 18 awards. Individual award
amounts vary.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
U. S. higher education institutions; non-academic
organizations, such as independent museums, observatories, research
laboratories, professional societies, and state and local governments,
including school districts and state education agencies; and for-profit firms.

Private Higher Education / Arthur Vining Davis Foundation
Supporting Academic Excellence
 
PROGRAM:
The Arthur Vining Davis Foundation’s purpose is to support
educational, cultural, scientific, and religious institutions within the United
States. Support generally will be reserved for schools of broadly
acknowledged academic excellence in the liberal arts and those with a solid
record of financial strength. A few grants are also made to larger teaching
and research universities with a national reputation for excellence in
graduate and undergraduate education.
 
DEADLINE:
Open.
 
FUNDING:
Awards range from $100,000 to $200,000.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Private four-year liberal arts institutions that place strong
emphasis on teaching and whose students choose majors primarily in the
areas of humanities, science and math. Historically Black colleges, Native
American tribal colleges, colleges in Appalachia and similar schools which

provide opportunities for traditionally underserved students in the U.S. are
also encouraged to apply.

Fresh Start / Microsoft
Providing Computer Upgrades
 
PROGRAM:
Microsoft’s Fresh Start for Donated Computers program
provides licensing and Windows installation CDs for schools that have
received donations of personal computers with Pentium II or older
processors. The program was set up specifically for primary and secondary
(K-12) institutions to help eliminate confusion about whether donated
personal computers have a legitimate operating system license. The
program provides license documentation and Windows installation CDs—at
no cost—for an original Windows operating system on qualifying donated
personal computers. The program offers both Windows 98 and Windows
2000. A school can choose the version that best matches the functionality of
the donated personal computer and the technology environment and
standards of the school.

ELIGIBILITY:
Accredited K-12 schools that have received donated personal
computers.
