Geoscience Education / National Science Foundation (NSF)
Improving Geosciences in Education
PROGRAM:
The National Science Foundation invites prop
osals for projects
to improve geoscience education at all levels. Their goal is to increase the
number and quality of earth and space science teachers, promote careers in
the field, increase the number of students enrolling in geoscience courses,
and increase the public’s understanding of geoscience related issues. The
program will consider proposals submitted under one of two tracks.
Track 1 projects should describe plans to initiate or pilot highly innovative
geoscience education activities that combine research and education and
make use of current geoscience research results and methods. Awards are
designed to provide start-up funding to enable projects to compete for
longer-term funding from other sources or become self-sustaining.

Track 2 projects integrate geoscience research and education activities into
existing NSF programs designed to increase the number of minorities
studying, teaching and conducting research in science, technology and
mathematics fields.
DEADLINE:
November 17, 2005.
FUNDING:
$2.5 million a year, including $1.5 million a year for track 1 pilot
projects and $1 million a year for track 2 integrative collaborations. NSF

which will support 45 awards, 40 pilot projects (Track 1) and five
collaborative projects (Track 2).

environments with the belief that interaction with real-world mentors will
boost students’ interest and achievement in math. The Actuarial Foundation
can provide a local network of actuaries ready to participate, as well as
suggestions on how to integrate math concepts from the workplace into the
classroom. Groups applying for grants will be given wide latitude in
