Innovative Reading Pilot Program / Florida Department of

Reading Instruction for K-3 Graders
PROGRAM:
The Innovative Reading Pilot Program will use internet delivered
technology to support reading instruction for children in kindergarten
through third grade. The program shall be developed using scientifically-
based reading research and have the ability to explicitly and systematically
differentiate instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency,
vocabulary, and comprehension.
DEADLINE:
September 30, 2005.
FUNDING:
$1,500,000 (Awards will be made to at least one small district,
one medium district, and one large district that are deemed fundable).

State Farm Florida Service-Learning and Home Safety /
Florida Department of Education
Raising Awareness of Disaster Preparation
PROGRAM:
State Farm Insurance and the State Farm Companies
Foundation have awarded funds to Florida to support student advocacy and
information campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of building
codes and disaster preparation. Florida schools, from kindergarten through
higher education, can receive funds to have students learn about these
issues and educate their peers, parents, and the public about them.
DEADLINE:
September 22, 2005.
FUNDING:
20-30 awards ranging up to $7,500.
ELIGIBILITY:
Public (including charter) schools (grades K-12) and
institutions of higher education (public and private).

Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy and
Space Science (IDEAS) / National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA)
Developing Education through Astronomy and Space Science
PROGRAM:
The Initiative to Develop Education through Astronomy and
Space Science (IDEAS) is administered by the Space Telescope Science
Institute and coordinated by the Office of Public Outreach on behalf of NASA.
This program strives to enhance science, mathematics and technology
education in the U.S. The program provides start-up funding to explore new
ways to translate astronomy and space science into contracts that will

educate K-14 students, teachers and the general public through partnerships
between astronomers/space scientists and education professionals.
DEADLINE:
October 21, 2005.
FUNDING:
Up to $20,000 for programs to be completed in one year.
Applicants may request additional time to complete their program (up to two
years), due to school schedules, etc. which the panel review team will
consider. For applicants requesting up to two years, the funding range is
from $20,001 to $50,000.
ELIGIBILITY:
Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator:
A key component of IDEAS
is an active partnership between an astronomer/space scientist and an
education professional. The partnership must be identified through the
Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator roles.
Institution:
Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) requires specific
documentation ensuring the awarded institution has responsible financial
management procedures in place, such as articles of incorporation, audit
reports, etc. These items should not be submitted during the proposal
stage, but must be in place before an award can be made. Failure to have
proper documentation may cause delays in funding disbursement and/or
program timelines.

Steppingstones of Technology Innovation for Children with
Disabilities / Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative
Services / U.S. Department of Education (USDE)
PROGRAM:
The Steppingstones of Technology Innovation for Children with
Disabilities program is designed to improve results for children with
disabilities by promoting the development, demonstration, and use of
technology; supporting educational media services activities designed to be
of educational value in the classroom setting to children with disabilities; and
providing support for captioning and video description that is appropriate for
use in the classroom setting.
DEADLINE:
Phases 1 and 2: October 18, 2005.
FUNDING:
Phase 1: 6 awards up to $200,000. Phase 2: 6 awards up to
$300,000.

Allstate Foundation
Helping Communities Succeed
PROGRAM:
The Allstate Foundation provides grants in three focus areas:
Economic Empowerment; Safe and Vital Communities; and Tolerance,
Inclusion, and Diversity. The Economic Empowerment initiative is a request
for monies for financial and insurance education, economic literacy, or
entrepreneurial business skill development programs. The Safe and Vital
Communities initiative is for grants that address catastrophe response and
mitigation, neighborhood revitalization, or youth anti-violence. The
Tolerance, Inclusion, and Diversity initiative focuses on teaching tolerance to
youth, alleviating discrimination, and ending hate crimes.

Keep Kids Drug Free Foundation
Strengthening Communities by Preventing Substance Abuse
PROGRAM:
The mission of the Keep Kids Drug Free Foundation is to
prevent substance abuse and strengthen communities by keeping Florida’s
youth away from alcohol, tobacco and drugs. The Foundation is most likely

to make grants to “grass roots” programs or projects that focus on bringing
groups together in constructive relationships that reduce the risk of
substance abuse. The areas that the Foundation is focusing on are:
assisting those whose needs are not being met by existing community
resources; addressing new and existing needs more effectively; building the
strengths and assets of people and communities and engaging them in
problem solving; focusing on a specific project that may reduce the risk of
substance abuse; leveraging additional private and public resources both
financial and volunteer for the purpose of keeping kids drug free, and
building the capacity of non-profit organizations to meet community needs
more effectively.

UPS Foundation
Supporting Communities
PROGRAM:
The UPS Foundation considers funding projects that focus on
national programs in the following areas: Human Welfare, Educational
Programs, and Major Initiatives. The Human Welfare program covers areas
such as crisis programs for families and children, help for the disadvantaged,
support for the disabled, and community development programs. The
Educational Programs area covers subjects such as academic research,
improved educational instruction, family learning, and school involvement
projects. The Major Initiatives section covers areas such as adult literacy or
food banks.

FUNDING:
Varies. Funding for the Human Welfare and the Educational
