Promoting Economic Literacy
PROGRAM:
The National Council on Economic Education (NCEE) has been
designated by The United States Department of Education’s Office of
Innovation and Improvement to implement the Excellence in Economic
Education (EEE) Program. The focus of the program is to promote economic
and financial literacy among all K-12 students by increasing their knowledge
of, and achievement in, economics. The knowledge will enable them to
become more productive and informed citizens.
DEADLINE:
September 16, 2005.
FUNDING:
Varies. Applicants are required to show how they will match the
Federal grant with an equal amount of funds from non-Federal funding.
ELIGIBILITY:
State education agencies; local education agencies; state or
local economic, personal finance, or entrepreneurial education organizations.
All applicants must identify at least one eligible partner that the applicant
will work with to carry out the goals identified in the application. “Eligible
partners” include: a) a private-sector entity, b) a State educational agency,
c) a local educational agency, d) an institution of higher education, e) an
organization promoting economic development, f) an organization promoting
educational excellence, and g) an organization promoting personal finance or
entrepreneurial education.

Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity / National
Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) / National
Institute of Health (NIH)
Providing Research Experience and Training
PROGRAM:
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences is seeking
projects that provide meaningful biomedical and behavioral research
experience and training for undergraduate and graduate students from
underrepresented groups. The Program provides institutional support for
existing or innovative student development activities, including research
internships that will increase students' knowledge, skills, and information as
they move to more advanced levels and ultimately attain a Ph.D. degree in
biomedical or behavioral research fields.
DEADLINE:
February 1, 2006.
FUNDING:
$4 million a year for eight to 10 four-year renewable awards.
ELIGIBILITY:
Nonprofit 501(c)3 research institutions that award a
baccalaureate, research master’s or doctoral degree and with a significant
number of full-time students from underrepresented groups.

Striving Readers / Office of Elementary and Secondary
Education (OESE)
Raising Reading Levels
PROGRAM:
The Striving Readers program is designed to raise reading
achievement levels of middle and high school students in Title I eligible
schools. The program will support new comprehensive reading initiatives or
expansion of existing initiatives that improve the quality of literacy
instruction, provide intensive literacy interventions to struggling adolescent
readers, and help to build a strong, scientific research base for identifying
and replicating strategies that improve adolescent literacy skills.
DEADLINE:
Notice of Intent to Apply: September 14, 2005. Applications:
November 14, 2005.
FUNDING:
8 awards ranging from $1,000,000 to $5,000,000.
ELIGIBILITY:
Local educational agencies (LEA) that have schools that are
eligible to receive funds under Part A of Title I of the Elementary and
Secondary Education Act. LEAs may apply individually, with other eligible
LEAs, or in partnership with one or more of the following entities: State
educational agencies (SEA); public or private institutions of higher
education; and public or private organizations with expertise in adolescent
literacy and/or rigorous evaluation. In any partnership, the fiscal agent
must be an eligible LEA.

Mattel Domestic Grants Program
Focusing on Children
PROGRAM:
Mattel and the Mattel Children's Foundation are pleased to
launch their new Domestic Grants Program with a focus on organizations or
programs that creatively address a locally-defined need directly impacting
children, particularly children ages 0-13 years. Other initiatives include
increasing access to education, promoting literacy to children in need and
resources that promote after-school education & achievement.

Cycle II ends September 30, 2005. To access Cycle II funding

FUNDING:
Awards ranging from $5,000 to $25,000.
ELIGIBILITY:
Nonprofit 501(c)3 organizations.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship
Reaching Out to the Community
PROGRAM:
Each operating Wal-Mart Store and SAM'S CLUB is eligible to
award two $1,000 scholarships to qualifying local high school seniors.
Students must be graduating high school seniors and can not be an
Associate or the child/dependent of an Associate of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
This award is used for the student's freshman year tuition, books, fees and
on-campus room and board at an approved, accredited U.S. college or
university.
DEADLINE:
Apply between November 1, 2005 and February 1, 2006.
FUNDING:
$1000 per award.
ELIGIBILITY:
High School Seniors living in a community with a WalMart
