SUBJECT:
2005-2006 SUCCEED Florida – Career Paths Funding Opportunities
The 2005 Legislative session authorized $6,000,000 to establish secondary and postsecondary career
and professional academies. Public schools, school district operated career centers, and the Florida
Virtual School are eligible to apply. Applicants must enter into a partnership with one or more
businesses, industries, industry economic development agencies, or postsecondary institutions to
establish an academy. Academies must correlate directly with career and industry certifications with
high growth, high demand, and high pay. A minimum of 50 percent of the funds will be provided to
programs in underserved communities, identified as those educational regions of the state that have
below average per capita public workforce education funding for the population aged 15 to 49.
Funds may be used to establish career and professional academies or to redesign career education
programs, and are not intended to supplant current funding.
To assist in preparing the application, the Florida Department of Education has scheduled a
conference call for Thursday, June 16, 2005, from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. EDT. The call-in numbers are:
toll free (888) 816-1123, local (850) 921-5230, or SunCom 291-5230. Due to a limited number of
available lines, institutions are asked to make arrangements to call in from one central location per
campus. The purpose of the conference call is to provide technical assistance related to the
development, implementation, and evaluation of career and professional academies. All relevant
staff members are encouraged to participate.
