Professional development initiatives to support the new Florida Principal
Leadership Standards
As part of our continuing efforts to improve the quality of school leadership at all levels, the
Department of Education has embarked upon an ambitious program designed to support the
implementation of our new Principal Leadership Standards and to provide high quality
professional development opportunities to current and emerging school leaders. This program to
develop educational leaders to meet the needs of tomorrow’s achievers consists of several
distinct components that are integrated with Florida Continuous Improvement Model for school
improvement and focus on the principal as the instructional leader.
Components of the program address the needs of emerging school leaders engaged in formal
educational leadership programs and district principal preparation programs, as well as district
professional development programs for current school leaders. Development of the components

to support this effort is being coordinated by a statewide partnership involving educational
leadership professional development providers with proven expertise in this area. All of the
professional development offerings will be aligned to
Florida’s Professional Development
Protocol.
This ongoing program will provide training, tools and support for school leaders through a
variety of mechanisms including:

Customized leadership training modules in critical areas of school leadership

Leadership academies and conferences for leadership skill building

Online resources and support of all elements of school leadership in Florida

Ongoing coaching and mentoring of school leaders

Recognition programs to inspire and honor Florida’s outstanding school leaders
To enhance these efforts, the Department is initiating development of an interactive, multi-media
website to provide school leaders in Florida with engaging professional development
opportunities and experiences that will connect the various program components into a statewide
system that will link to and support district programs to prepare and develop effective school
leaders. This new website will focus on Florida’s new School Principal Leadership Standards
and use Florida’s Continuous Improvement Model as the foundation upon which the standards
are implemented.
As we move forward in this exciting opportunity to develop our educational leaders for
tomorrow’s achievers, we will continue to call upon the school, district and college level leaders
of our state to develop and expand our partnership to implement our new Florida Principal
Leadership Standards. The involvement of over 300 individuals from over 40 Florida school
districts, institutions of higher education and professional organizations in the research,
development and review of our new standards underscored the deep commitment of stakeholders
in this area.

Educator Recruitment, Development and Retention at 850/245-0435 or Kathy.Hebda@fldoe.org.
