SUBJECT:
CLEP Level 2 Foreign-Language Scores Updated on the ACC Credit-by-Exam List
The Department of Education has identified eight strategic priorities in its agency strategic planning
process. One of these priorities specifically addresses the need to set, align, and apply academic
curricular and testing standards. In an attempt to standardize the award of postsecondary credit awarded
for accelerated examinations, the Articulation Coordinating Committee developed Credit-By-
Examination equivalents and associated guidelines in 2001.
Effective July 2001, the American Council on Education (ACE) recommended a uniform credit-granting
score of 50 across all CLEP subjects (with the exception of Level 2 French, German, and Spanish). The
February 1, 2003, ACE recommended the following scores for Level 2 foreign-language exams: 63 for
German language, 62 for French language, and 66 for Spanish language.
Because the ACC reviews the credit-by-exam list on a 5-year cycle, the 2003 recommendations for Level
2 foreign-language were not included on the ACC list. However, in response to requests from several
institutions, we have updated the CLEP level 2 foreign-language scores on the credit-by-exam list, and it
is available online at www.FACTS.org, under
Advising Manuals
. This update should eliminate the extra
step involved in referencing the College Board Web site for these updated scores. The entire ACC credit-
by-exam list will be reviewed in the coming year as part of the regular 5-year cycle. We welcome input
related to the upcoming review.
