Subject:
School Survey for the Study of Alternatives to Suspension
The Florida Department of Education’s goal of
Highest Student Achievement
is one of the top priorities
for K-12, and the Department of Education, Bureau of Family and Community Outreach, has contracted
with Evaluation Systems Design, Inc., to conduct a study of the procedures and programs school districts
have implemented that are alternatives to suspending students from school. This project is funded
through Title IV and began in February 2004. The report for last year is available under the publications
section of the website for Evaluation Systems Design, Inc., http://www.esdi.cc/.
To increase the Department’s knowledge of these programs, we are conducting a survey of all schools in
the state to obtain more detailed information on current practices in alternatives to out-of-school
suspension. The survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Individual school results will not be
released, only summaries for reporting purposes. Please click on this link to complete the survey:

If you have questions or additional comments, please contact Dr. Constance Bergquist, President, at
Evaluation Systems Design, Inc., 5145 Pimlico Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32309 (Phone: 850-893-9504)
(Fax: 850-893-9569) (e-mail: esdi@talstar.com).
I hope you will join the department in our efforts to learn more about effective alternatives to suspension
in Florida.
