    SUBJECT:

Just Read, Florida! K-12 Reading Coaches’ Boot Camp
Coaching is in the forefront of education across the nation today. In alignment with the K-12
    Comprehensive Research-Based Reading Plan and
    Reading First
    coaching model guidelines, we
would like to offer a unique professional development opportunity.
Are you aware of educators in your school or district who might be ready to transition into the
role of an elementary or secondary reading coach? Do these same educators need to learn more
about the roles and responsibilities of a reading coach? For these individuals, Just Read, Florida!
is hosting a Reading Coaches’ Boot Camp. The Camp will be held on May 9-13, 2005, at the
Rosen Centre Hotel located in Orlando on International Drive adjacent to the Orange County
Convention Center. Please do not contact the hotel directly.
We are asking that you, as a district or school administrator or regional coordinator, nominate or
recommend two candidates who might want to apply to the Reading Coaches’ Boot Camp and
direct them to the online application website.
    You may recommend individuals whose
interest, background and credentials indicate potential for the critical role of a reading coach. No
more than two applicants from a single school can be recommended.

    Memo to District School Superintendents
    Page 2
A candidate who qualifies to apply for the Reading Coaches’ Boot Camp should be a master
educator who is not currently a coach and has:
    • a broad and deep knowledge of reading
    • preferably five years of successful teaching experience,
    ?
though a minimum of three years experience will be considered
    ?
    • an understanding of how to collaboratively work with adults
Space for the Reading Boot Camp is limited to approximately 400 educators; therefore,
applications will be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis. If one of your recommended
applicants qualifies as a candidate to participate, the school-based administrator needs to be
contacted to agree to provide a substitute teacher as well as release time for the week of training
in Orlando. Lodging will be provided by Just Read, Florida! The district or school is asked to
provide per diem and travel as the in kind contribution to this exciting opportunity.
All applicants must complete the application process by March 17, 2005 online at
    www.justreadflorida.com,
under conference information. Applications will then be reviewed
and the candidates will be notified of their eligibility and receive further instructions regarding
    registration.
Best wishes and we look forward to meeting potential coaches from your district soon!
