PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) offers this program to provide
grants to eligible applicants to assist them in establishing or expanding a program of voluntary
public school choice in order to provide parents, particularly parents whose children attend low-
performing schools, with greater choice in their children's education.

: Estimated Available Funds: $25,000,000.
Estimated Range of Awards: $2,500,000-$5,000,000 per year.

Women's Educational Equity Program (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) offers this program to provide
financial assistance to promote gender equity in education; to enable educational agencies to
meet the requirements of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972; and to promote equity
in education for women and girls who suffer from multiple forms of discrimination based on sex
and race, ethnic origin, limited English proficiency, disability or age.

Centers for Independent Living (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) offers this program to provide
support for planning, conducting, administering, and evaluating centers for independent living
(centers) consistent with the State plan for establishing a statewide network of centers.
DEADLINE
: August 1, 2002.
FUNDING
: Estimated Available Funds: $1,252,125.00.

ELIGIBILITY
: To be eligible to apply, an applicant must: (a) be a consumer-controlled,
community-based, cross-disability, nonresidential, private nonprofit agency that is designed and
operated within a local community by individuals with disabilities and provides an array of
independent living services; (b) have the power and authority to meet the requirements in 34

CFR 366.2(a)(1); (c) be able to plan, conduct, administer, and evaluate a center consistent with
the requirements in subparts F and G of 34 CFR part 366; and (d) either -- (1) not currently be
receiving funds under part C of Chapter 1 of Title VII of the Act; or (2) propose the expansion of
an existing center through the establishment of a separate and complete center (except that the
governing board of the existing center may serve as the governing board of the new center) at a
different geographical location. Eligibility under this competition is limited to entities proposing
to serve areas that are unserved or underserved in the States and territories listed under Available
Funds and Estimated Number of Awards.

Job Training for Youths (DoL)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) seeks applications for model demonstration
programs that develop, implement, evaluate and disseminate new or improved approaches to
increase the participation of youths with disabilities in mainstream workforce development
activities under the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).
Grantees will generate, test and promote best practices to WIA-assisted youth programs. Each
project must involve members of two categories in strategic planning and implementation
activities: youths with disabilities, including psychiatric disabilities, substance addiction,
retardation and learning disabilities; and relevant experts in the area of youths with disabilities,
from parents and employers to disabilities organizations, researchers and policymakers.
DEADLINE
: August 12, 2002.
FUNDING
: $2.5 million for up to five awards ranging from $350,000 to $500,000 each. The
project period is two years.
ELIGIBILITY
: WIA grant recipients for a local area, fiscal agents for such grants recipients,
local boards for competitively selected youth service providers.

Teen Pregnancy Prevention (CDC)
PROGRAM
: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is inviting applications
for projects to increase the ability of national organizations and state and local coalitions to
prevent teen pregnancy, promote adolescent reproductive health and abstinence and prevent
sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.

National organization grantees will convene an expert panel of researchers and evaluators to
develop a strategic plan for increasing the use of science-based interventions in national, state
and local teen pregnancy prevention programs and provide technical assistance to state and local
coalitions to integrate science into their efforts. Coalition awardees will review current scientific
literature on teen pregnancy prevention and youth development, identify effective program
elements and collaborate with other funded recipients to share approaches and disseminate
findings through publications and meetings.
DEADLINE
: July 23, 2002.
FUNDING
: For national organizations, $500,000 for one to three awards of $100,000 to
$500,000 a year each. For coalitions, $800,000 for three to eight awards of $80,000 to $180,000
a year each. The project period is three years under both components.
ELIGIBILITY
: For grants to support national organizations in assisting coalitions: national
nonprofit non-government organizations that propose to serve coalitions in multiple states that
have a documented history of providing teen pregnancy prevention. For grants to increase
coalition capacity: state and local coalitions in cities with more than 500,000 residents.

Toyota Camry Music Education Foundation
PROGRAM
: The National Association for Music Education (MENC) oversees these awards—
underwritten by Toyota Motor Sales USA—to provide financial support to music programs that
are in danger of being reduced or eliminated from school programs.
DEADLINE
: October 11, 2002.
FUNDING
: Most grants will be $50,000 each, although the amount may be adjusted up or
down by $20,000 as required by circumstances. Funds may be used for equipment and supplies,
musical instruments, computers and music education software and up to 50 percent of a new
teacher’s salary. Funds may not be used to replace existing expenditures for teacher salaries.
ELIGIBILITY
: Schools that are clearly in danger of losing music programs or currently unable
to provide students with adequate music programs due to lack of resources and that serve a
population of students in which at least 50 percent are living in poverty or are eligible for the free
or reduced lunch program.
