SUBJECT:
School Bus Driver’s Manual - Critical Incident Procedures
Student transportation safety is one of the most critical components in ensuring that students
have access to a high quality education. To further that goal the Department of Education’s
School Transportation Management Section and the Office of Safe and Healthy Schools are
introducing a new document for use in school districts, the “School Bus Driver’s Manual -
Critical Incident Procedures.”
This manual provides procedures to be used in the event of
emergencies on a school bus. We encourage each district to review the procedures and modify
them as needed for incorporation into local district policy.
Although this manual reflects the best practices of several Florida school district transportation
departments, it does not identify issues that may occur with every emergency. Therefore, the
driver’s best judgment must be used, while emphasizing the priorities of ensuring safety and
protecting life, property and the environment.
As part of their training in district emergency procedures, drivers should become thoroughly
familiar with the enclosed manual. Copies may be made for each driver to keep on board. In an
emergency, drivers should always follow the instructions of law enforcement personnel and
other emergency responders.
