    Broadening Our Horizons
     
    PROGRAM:
    The State Department’s Bureau
    of Educational and Cultural
    Affairs seeks applications for projects under the P4L Thematic Youth Projects
    Initiative; Linking Individuals, Knowledge and Culture. The goal of this
    program is to break down stereotypes that divide peoples, promote good
    governance, contribute to conflict prevention and management, and build
    respect for cultural expression and identity in a world that is experiencing
    rapid globalization. The overarching goals of the P4L Thematic Youth
    Projects Initiative are: develop a sense of civic responsibility and
    commitment to enhancing cultural bridges among youth; promote mutual
    understanding between the United States and the people of other countries;
    and foster personal and institutional ties between participants and partner
    countries.
     
    DEADLINE:
    March 24, 2005.
     
    FUNDING:
    $1.2 million for five to 10 awards of $50,000 to $250,000 each.
    The project period is one year to 18 months.

    Grants to Reduce Alcohol Abuse / United States
    Department OF Education (USED)
    Reducing Alcohol Abuse
     
    PROGRAM:
    The Grants to Reduce Alcohol Abuse program enables Local
    Education Agencies (LEAs) to develop and implement innovative and
    effective programs to reduce alcohol abuse in secondary schools. Up to 25
    percent of funding may be reserved for grants to low-income and rural LEAs.
     
    DEADLINE:
    March 28, 2005.
     
    FUNDING:
    57 awards ranging from $300,000 to $500,000.
     
    ELIGIBILITY:
    Local Education Agencies.

    Starbucks Foundation
    Enhancing Literacy and Youth Leadership
     
    PROGRAM:
    The Starbucks Foundation provides grants to fund literacy and
    youth leadership programs. The goals are to promote personal development
    in children as well as raise their awareness of the world around them. As a
    condition of receiving a grant, the Foundation requires proposals to
    incorporate Starbucks partners in a meaningful way.
     
    DEADLINE:
    April 1, 2005.
     
    FUNDING:
    Awards range in size from $5,000 to $20,000.

    7-11 Community Outreach
    Reaching Out to the Community
     
    PROGRAM:
    The 7-Eleven Community Outreach program focuses upon
    education for children 14 years of age and older. Preference is given to
    proposals that assist with Workforce Development or Language Education.
    The Workforce Development program prepares individuals to participate in
    the workforce and encourage personal empowerment, betterment and self-
    sufficiency. The Language Education program promotes literacy, language
    training and English as a second language. A main focus is to help at-risk or
    economically disadvantaged individuals.
     
    DEADLINE:
    Open.
     
    FUNDING:
    Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500.
     
    ELIGIBILITY:
    501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations.

    Playwright Discovery Award for Students / VSA (Very
    Special Artists)
    Life Through Art
     
    PROGRAM:
    The VSA (Very Special Artists) Arts Playwright Discovery Award
    program challenges middle and high school students of all abilities to take a
    closer look at the world around them, examine how disability affects their
    lives and the lives of others, and express their views through the art of
    writing a one-act play.
     
    DEADLINE:
    April 15, 2005.
     
    FUNDING:
    The award recipients receive scholarship awards and a trip to
    Washington, D.C. to view the production at the John F. Kennedy Center for
    the Performing Arts.

    ELIGIBILITY:
    Authors must be U.S. Citizens or permanent residents of the
    U.S. and must be students in grades 6-12 (or equivalent). All entries must
    be one-act plays of less than 40 pages in length.
