MEMORANDUM
TO:
District MIS Directors, Student Data Base Contacts, Staff Data Base Contacts
FROM:
Lavan Dukes
SUBJECT:
Data Quality and Reporting To Meet New Requirements for Federal Funding
This is a request for your help in ensuring the accuracy of data to meet requirements of new federal
legislation and funding. Increasingly, data quality has become a critical issue.
Designed to help close the achievement gap between disadvantaged and minority students and their
peers, the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires stronger accountability for results as
well as increased flexibility and local control in the administration of public education. Delivery of
federal NCLB funding is contingent on more comprehensive public reporting by the DOE on the status
of students and schools. This includes detailed information on free/reduced-price lunch status of
students by race and gender, LEP status, ESE status, and other categories that the Department will
prepare in an extensive report (or series of reports) featuring disaggregated data across multiple
indicators. Along with free/reduced-price lunch and special program area data, student end-of-year
reporting will play a critical role in meeting the new reporting requirements.
For these reasons, and because Florida is increasingly being viewed as a model for other states’
responses to the new reporting requirements, you’re being asked to make every effort possible to ensure
the quality of the data reported by your district to the Department of Education. In addition to your
local data quality control measures, there are several DOE resources to assist you in editing and
reporting your district’s data accurately. These include the following:
?
Edit-status reports for determining the status of transmissions and record counts. These may be
accessed via NWRDC.
?
Summary reports (F62261 and F62262) that aggregate data for each school. (These may be
distributed to schools for review.)
?
DOE Student Data Base and Staff Data Base Reports for Request showing data in specific reporting
formats.
?
DOE dropout match files (F62213).
