PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) provides grants to states and to
partnerships to promote improvements in the quality of new teachers with the ultimate goal of
increasing student achievement in pre-K-12 classrooms.
DEADLINE
: July 25, 2002.
FUNDING
: $8,920,000.
Estimated Range of Awards: $195,000 - $465,000.
Estimated Average Size of Awards: $372,000.
Estimated Number of Awards: 24.

ELIGIBILITY
: States and partnerships comprised, at a minimum, of an institution of higher
education with an eligible teacher preparation program, a school of arts and sciences, and a high-
need local educational agency (LEA). These terms are defined in section 203 of the Higher
Education Act and in regulations for this program in 34 CFR 611. States and partnerships that
received a fiscal year 1999 grant under this program are not eligible for this competition.

Research and Innovation to Improve Services and Results for Children

PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) offers these grants to produce, and
advance the use of, knowledge to improve educational and early intervention results for infants,
toddlers, and children with disabilities.

ELIGIBILITY
: Eligible applicants under the program’s Absolute Priority 1 and under focus
areas 1 and 2 of Absolute Priority 2, are: state educational agencies (SEAs), local educational
agencies (LEAs), institutions of higher education (IHEs), other public agencies, private nonprofit
organizations, outlying areas, freely associated states, and Indian tribes or tribal organizations.
For focus area 3 under Absolute Priority 2, eligible applicants are: limited to LEAs, and LEAs in
consortia with one or more other LEAs, IHEs, other public agencies, or other organizations.
However, in the event that the LEA forms a consortium with other organizations, the LEA must
be the applicant and act in a manner consistent with 34 CFR 75.129. For focus area 4 under
Absolute Priority 2, eligible applicants are limited to: SEAs, and SEAs in consortia with one or
more LEAs, IHEs, or private nonprofit organizations. However, an LEA or SEA must be the
applicant and act in a manner consistent with 34 CFR 75.129. Note: LEAs are not eligible unless
in consortia with SEAs.

Demonstration Projects to Ensure Students with Disabilities Receive a Quality
Higher Education (USDOE)
PROGRAM
: The U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) offers this program to provide grants
to institutions of higher education (IHEs) to develop innovative demonstration projects. The
purpose of the demonstration program is to provide technical assistance and professional
development for faculty and administrators in IHEs in order to provide them with the skills and
supports that they need to teach students with disabilities. The program will also be used to
widely disseminate research and training to enable faculty and administrators in other IHEs to
meet the educational needs of students with disabilities.

: Available Funds: $6,930,000.
Estimated Range of Awards: $100,000-$350,000.

International Reading Association Travel Grants for Educators
PROGRAM
: International Reading Association’s (IRA) Travel Grants for Educators support
IRA-member educators from any country who would like to attend an IRA meeting outside of
his or her home country. Eligible meetings include the IRA annual convention, world congress,
special institutes and seminars, and special seminars held by councils or affiliates.
DEADLINE
: August 1, 2002.
FUNDING
: Expenses related to attending an IRA meeting that is outside of the applicant’s host
country.
ELIGIBILITY
: Educators from any country who are IRA members or a member of an IRA-
affiliated group. Previous travel grant winners are not eligible to re-apply.

National Association for Gifted Children Curriculum Awards
PROGRAM
: The National Association for Gifted Children’s (NAGC) Curriculum Studies
Division will honor members who have developed outstanding curriculum units that promote
academic achievement, talent development, cognitive growth, and motivation for learning.
Submit proposals in one of the following award categories:

Curriculum for gifted education in the regular classroom: primary grades (pre-K through
third grade), intermediate grades (four through eight), or secondary grades (nine through 12).
?
Curriculum designed to be used solely with gifted education students: primary grades (pre-K
through third grade), intermediate grades (four through eight), or secondary grades (nine
through 12).

: National recognition and dissemination of curriculum units among other NAGC
members.
