INVITATION TO MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL HIV/AIDS AND
PREGNANCY PREVENTION WORKSHOPS: “
PROMOTING
PREVENTION TOGETHER”
The Department of Education’s Office of Safe and Healthy Schools Coordinated School Health
Program (CSHP) is sponsoring fall workshops on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV),
sexually transmitted diseases (STD) and pregnancy prevention for teachers, school nurses,
Department of Health personnel, school social workers, and parents, titled
Promoting Prevention
Together
. These workshops will be offered on
September 30, 2004, in Pensacola, at the
University of West Florida Conference Center, and October 7, 2004, in Tallahassee, at the
Leon County Civic Center, from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The workshops are offered in collaboration with school districts, the American Red Cross,
Campfire U.S.A., and the Florida Department of Health Abstinence Projects. The purpose of this
project is to provide training in various prevention curricula, instructional strategies, and

classroom activities. Participants will learn about community and teaching resources to
supplement their school-based programs, and the latest instructional strategies for
HIV/AIDS/STD prevention and human sexuality training. Additionally, a special session titled
Birds, Bees, and Butterflies in Your Stomach
is being offered for parents to prepare them to
speak with their children about human sexuality.
District health coordinators, life management skills teachers, health education teachers, school
nurses, school social workers, staff from the local health departments, and parents are
encouraged to participate. School districts will be reimbursed for the substitutes of teachers who
attend these workshops, if needed. The workshops will be limited to the first 150 participants
registering for each location. Certificates of attendance will be provided to participants who
wish to apply for Continuing Education Units (CEU) or in-service points through their local area
offices or school boards.
Please find attached a tentative agenda, a registration form, and an invoice for teacher
substitutes.
The registration form should be submitted via fax by September 20, 2004, to
(850) 245-5116 or e-mail to CSHPRegistration @fldoe.org.
The teacher substitute form must
be submitted by fax after attending the workshop.
