MEMORANDUM
TO:
District School Superintendents
FROM:
Jim Warford
DATE:
July 26, 2004
SUBJECT:
REGIONAL MEETINGS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELORS
During the last 18 years, representatives from the Division of Colleges and Universities, Division of
Community Colleges, Division of Public Schools, State University Admissions Offices, and other key
personnel in the Department of Education have coordinated comprehensive workshops for
counselors in our secondary schools. These regional workshops provide important information
regarding high school graduation requirements and admission requirements into Florida’s
postsecondary institutions.
Department staff representing K-20 are expanding the 2004 fall regional meetings to include
Powerpoint presentations by the admissions directors from all of the 11 state universities,
informational packets that will address the most frequently asked questions, extended time to meet
and talk with specific admission directors, and additional time for questions and answers from the
panel of presenters. We believe the 2004 regional meetings will greatly enhance the ability of all
middle and high school counselors to provide effective academic advisement and counseling to their
students.

Regional Meetings for Middle and High School Counselors
July 26, 2004
Page 2
Successful transitions from middle school to high school and then to postsecondary education are
important to the educational achievements of our students. Middle school counselors are in an
excellent position to help parents and students begin thinking about postsecondary options and how
these options can be affected by decisions made in middle and high school. Middle school
counselors play an important role in acquainting parents of entering high school students with high
school courses, including the opportunity and benefits of acceleration mechanisms such as
advanced placement, International Baccalaureate, Advanced International Certificate of Education,
dual enrollment, and Florida Virtual School courses.
It is imperative, as we move forward in the articulation process, that middle school counselors take
an active part in participating in these workshops. I ask that you strongly encourage your middle and
high school counselors to attend one of the seven regional workshops scheduled for late August and
early September. Additional information regarding the workshops, including the dates, locations of
each workshop, agenda, and online registration will be disseminated during early August.
Thank you for your support in making this a record year for attendance of middle and high school
counselors in this important K-20 initiative.
NOTE:
Please make sure that persons below are registered to receive correspondence from the
