SUBJECT: Technology for Students with Disabilities
When allocating your technology funds this year, it is important to consider technology for
students with disabilities. Through the use of appropriate assistive and instructional technology,
all students with disabilities can have access to the curriculum provided by the district’s
instructional personnel.
The following professionals can help you make decisions regarding the appropriate technology
for exceptional student education:
•
?
the local assistive technology specialist (LATS) appointed by the administrator of
exceptional student education
•
?
the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) technology specialist at the
district’s FDLRS Associate Center (see the attached contact information)

an assistive technology specialist from the ATEN Coordinating Unit at (800) 328-3678.
These professionals can answer questions about appropriate technology, provide training on
specific technology, and provide technical assistance to school personnel. In addition, the ATEN
Coordinating Unit can loan equipment to a local assistive technology specialist for assessment
and trials with individual students. Please make use of these resources when making decisions
about technology for students with special needs.
