Projects
PROGRAM
: The National Institute of Health and the Center for Disease
Control and Prevention invite applications for community outreach, training,
research, education and evaluation projects. These projects are designed to
mitigate adverse environmental and occupational factors that affect
underserved populations.
Projects should provide effective methods for communicating environmental
and occupational health concepts, issues, and resources in low-income and
underserved communities; design community-based culturally sensitive
education programs; establish and evaluate community-based training to
increase awareness of environmental and occupational health issues; train
and educate neighborhood health professionals in prevention, diagnosis and

treatment of disorders related to environmental exposures; and develop
research plans to measure population exposures and quantify human health
effects in the community. (June 11 NIH Guide)
DEADLINE
: October 17, 2004 for letters of intent; November 17, 2004 for
applications.
FUNDING
: Total award of $2.2 million, seven to nine individual awards of
up to $225,000 each, per year for four years.
ELIGIBILITY
: Non-profit 501(c) 3 organizations, such as universities;
colleges; hospitals; laboratories, and state and local governments.

Nickelodeon’s Let’s Just Play Initiative
Promoting Active Physical Play in Grades K-9 and After-school Programs
PROGRAM
: Nickelodeon’s Let’s Just Play Initiative will provide a
comprehensive and creative plan for using funds to initiate or expand
opportunities for active physical play in their organization.
Suggested ways to use awarded funds are to host days of play for clubs,
schools, and communities; purchase playground, sports, and athletic
equipment; integrate play time into school, organization curriculum;
establish athletic or intramural clubs and teams, and establish nutritional or
health education programs.
DEADLINE
: November 1, 2004.
FUNDING
: Ranges from $5,000 to $10,000.
ELIGIBILITY
: Elementary and middle schools grades K through 9 (public
and non-profit private) and after-school community-based organizations with
non-profit 501(c) 3 status.

Staples Foundation for Learning, Inc.
Investing in their Communities
PROGRAM
: Staples Foundation for Learning’s mission is to provide funding
for programs that support or provide job skills and/or education for all
people, with a special emphasis on disadvantaged youth.
The foundation considers educational funding to be an investment in the
future of the communities in which it serves. Their goal is to help local
groups with programs and services that will positively impact the
community.

Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy
Developing and Expanding Family Literacy Efforts Nationwide
PROGRAM
: The goal of the Barbara Bush Foundation’s Family Literacy
National Grant Program is to develop and expand family literacy efforts
nationwide and to support the development of literacy programs that build
families of readers.
Family Literacy programs funded through the foundation's National Grant
Program must include all of the following components:
•
Reading instruction for parents or primary care-givers (pre-
GED/GED/ESL etc)
•
Literacy or pre-literacy instruction for children
•
Intergenerational activities where the parents/primary caregivers and
children come together to learn and to read
Programs can also include additional components such as parental support
groups, parental involvement, home visits, and job training.
DEADLINE
: September 10, 2004.
FUNDING
: Total funding approximately $650,000, individual grants up to
$65,000.
ELIGIBILITY
: Non-profit 501(c) 3 organizations that have been in
existence for two or more years, have maintained fiscal accountability, and
operate an instructional literacy program.
