Encouraging New Ways to Monitor Educational Progress
 
PROGRAM
: The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
surveys the educational achievement of students in the United States and
monitors their progress over time. This research program encourages the
preparation of reports that would not otherwise be available, utilizing new
ideas or state-of-the-art techniques to analyze and report the information
contained in NAEP and the NAEP High School Transcript Studies (CFDA#:
84.902).
  
DEADLINE
: May 13, 2004.
 
FUNDING
: Range of awards $65,000 - $100,000.

21st Century Community Learning Centers Program /
Florida Department of Education (FLDOE)
Providing Learning Centers for Title I School Communities
 
PROGRAM:
 
The purpose of this grant is to provide before, after or summer
school programs for Title I students and their families. The program is
designed to serve students and families of students who attend schools with
a high concentration of low-income, low-performing schools and schools
designated as in need of improvement under Title I (pursuant to Title I part
A, Subpart I).
 
DEADLINE:
May 10, 2004.
 
FUNDING:
Total amount of $24,393,418; applicants must apply for a
minimum of $50,000 per year. Previously funded 21st CCLC awards ranged
in scope from $200,000 to $1,400,000. Most 21st CCLC awards average
about $200,000 per center. The amount per grant varies depending on the
type of services offered, the number of students served and the number of
centers within a program.
 
ELIGIBILITY:
Local education agencies (LEAs), community-based
organizations (including faith-based organizations), other public and private
entities, or a consortium of two or more such agencies, organizations, or
entities. The statute encourages eligible organizations to collaborate in
applying for funds.

Allstate Foundation
Funding Three Community Initiatives
 
PROGRAM
: The Allstate Foundation funds programs that support three
focus areas: safe and vital communities; tolerance, inclusion and diversity;
and economic empowerment.
 
 
Safe and vital communities:
project will foster safe and vital
communities where people live, work and raise families. These
communities should be economically strong, crime-free and offer a
sense of belonging and commitment.
 
Tolerance, inclusion and diversity:
projects will support the link
between crime-free communities and tolerance. Allstate believes
personal safety and security can be achieved when individuals feel a
sense of belonging.
 
Economic empowerment:
projects will encourage a thriving, viable
community where residents have access to economic resources and
knowledge to make informed decisions about their financial future.

Motorola Foundation
Encouraging Lifelong Learning
 
PROGRAM
: Motorola Foundation provides funding to higher education and a
multitude of primary and secondary education programs. These programs
will assist individuals in reaching their greatest potential and encourage
them to become lifelong learners.
Their goal is to augment education levels for youth throughout the world
where they do business, this includes Florida communities. Focus will be on
math, science and engineering education. Emphasis is also placed on
assisting human services, primarily through support to local United Way
organizations.
Global Priority Giving Areas are:
 
Universities - engineering/ technical/science programs.

Programs reaching traditionally under-represented groups in the areas
of math, science, engineering and business.
 
Programs providing technical assistance, research and statistical
information on the state of science and engineering education.
 
Strengthening science and mathematics education at the pre-collegiate
level.
 
Programs that support the protection and preservation of the
environment.

G and Discovery Channel Sweepstakes
Giving Away a Wireless Computer Lab
 
PROGRAM
: CDW•G and Discovery Channel School have partnered to give
away a Wireless Computer Lab. The lab is complete with 20 IBM Think Pad
Notebook Computers, accessories, on-site set up and the flexibility to take
the technology anywhere in the school. Also, first, second, third and fourth
place awards will be given (see funding below).
 
DEADLINE
: May 15, 2004.
 
FUNDING
: One grand prize winner will receive a mobile wireless notebook
lab ($40,000 value); ten first place winners will receive projectors from
Hewlett Packard (HP); ten second place winners will receive networking
products from D-link; ten third place winners will receive inkjet printers from
HP, and ten fourth place winners will receive a selection of curriculum
materials from the Discovery Channel School library.
 
ELIGIBILITY
: Employees of public, private or parochial K-12 schools.

Singing for Change (SFC) / Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville
Supporting Programs in Three Areas of Interest
 
PROGRAM
: Jimmy Buffett’s Singing for Change grants focus on three areas
of interest including:
 
 
Children and families:
programs are concerned with the health,
education and protection of children and their families. Projects that
foster self-esteem and self-sufficiency and that teach nonviolence and
creative problem solving are most likely to be considered.
  
 
The environment:
programs will promote environmental awareness
and teach people methods of conservation, protection and the
responsible use of natural resources.
 
 
Disenfranchised groups:
SFC defines these groups as people who
have been marginalized in society because of their low levels of skill,
education or income; people with AIDS, disabilities, and homeless
people. Projects likely to be considered are those which:
1.
help people overcome social or economic barriers to education or
employment
2.
promote the empowerment of individuals toward self-sufficiency,
and provide opportunities for personal growth
3.
demonstrate human equality and encourage people to cross
boundary lines to help others.
 
  
 
DEADLINE
: One page letters of interest are accepted year-round, full
proposals are by invitation only.
 
FUNDING
: Ranges from $500.00-$10,000.00.
 
ELIGIBILITY
: 501(c)3 nonprofits.
